So as of now... I have to figure out how to fix those problems I have.... as cheap as I can !
Yesterday, I found a link for a website that sold all sorts of things for restorting/modifying your jon boats. They sold pre assembled braces that can be welded in place. I think that would be a good start, but I cant find the site any more haha !

So tonight we are heading to the lumber yard for the wood for the transom, the sealer, and some other misc things. Im happy with the progress so far... Total cost thus far.. $1065 ... Not to shabby. YET ! haha

Nice job on the paint stripping...Now it does seem you have some structural problems. If you have a buddy that can weld aluminum, then you may want to have him asses the work.

A thin transom like 1" may be better to go solid wood if you can. Or bond 2 identical thickness pieces of plywood together. Making a 1 piece transom with exact thickness.

I recently purchased a 16' Starcraft and she has been welded in a couple spots, so I just sanded down to shape before painting. She has been battered quite a bit likie yours with a couple gouges on portbow.

She's not pretty, but on her maiden voyage, I got to find the bugs she has and SHE DOEN'T LEAK!!!!! Which to me is the priority.

Now that your boat is stripped, have you given her a water leak test?

As for the deck bracing. The wood if using 2x2 should not be too heavy, just make sure to trwat them to help keep them dry. There is a caulking out there that will bond them to the hull.
That of course you consider putting in a casting deck...

Very nice job so far...Keep it coming...

Yup.... use plywood for the transom. (Oak rots out fast!!!!) You can clamp and glue two pieces together with gorilla glue or even wood glue but make sure it is clamped tight until dry.

Coat the wood on all edges and sides with epoxy resin (or regular fiberglass resin) and at least one layer of cloth..... I would use two coats of resin. Mkae sure it is completely sealed. Trust me it will be there when you have grandchildren ;)

Having the aluminum brackets welded is a great idea and that would be the right way.... while you are at the welding have those pieces of steel removed and have those cracks welded too.

Deck bracing :) since you are doing this the right way..... use aluminum.

Check out the completed project section and look at what was done there... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=286547

Well, Little update on the boat.

While I was at work, My grandpa went ahead and got rid of those rusty steel braces. I was thinking it was going to be a tough ugly job but he went through it easy ! Seems to always go that way with him haha

In this pis you can see the mess the guy tried to fix the many leaks Im guessing came with all those rivets. Im looking at putting "steelflex" on it once I have the rivets back in place and everything !

So that's the priority at the moment. Once that's done.. and the cracks are welded and everything is sturdy again. The transom will go back in. Then the steel flex put on, paint... once that's dry and I'm happy..It'll be time to work on the inside !

Thanks for tuning in everyone !
