Hello all just aquired a 14' alum. jon boat, and it looks like the guy i bought it off of tried to make a transom out of fiberglass only. he got it about 4 layers thick, and where the motor sets is about 1/2 inch thick it is running a 9.5 rude 71 model. is this safe or should i grind this all out and compleatly re do this work? will try to get pics up later but it looks like he ran out of money and tried to build it up with 1x6's lol not sure what to do with it, thats ALOT of grinding.

ps traiding one of the guys i work with a 25 merc for the rude to go on this boat so i need to really beef up the transom...

All the folks on here are a wealth of knowledge.

looks like the P.O. used some old pallets for wood. I would say all that should come out and be redone properly.

yea thats what i was thinking i do have some 1/4" alum plate i was thinking of grinding the fiberglass smoth and even then bolting up the alum plate and fiberglassing it in for strength to get rid of the wood and possibly riviting in some supports for it also for strength and suport for the 25 hp merc do you think this would help? the added weight would be about 35 lbs and this boat flies with just the 9.5 the 25 is kind of scary lol

i would only be using about a 2 foot wide section of the alum. plate but from top to bottom of the transom do yall think this would be a good idea or should i just grind out all of the fiberglass and do one from wood?
