Re: 14 Ft. Sears Aluminum Project

I did not notice any ill effects from getting self etching primer on Gluvit when doing mine. It also adhered very good to the Gluvit.

I have done the wire wheel stripping and it works, but it can be a big pain. I still have to clean / strip the bottom of my boat. Sometime this summer I'll get to it, maybe.

Re: 14 Ft. Sears Aluminum Project

Well, the plan was to rattle can the self etching primer right about now, but even in the 80 degree weather we are having here in AZ, the most recent Gluvit application isn't ready yet. Or at least I don't think it is. It is still the tiniest bit soft and tacky. Not wanting to waste a perfectly good saturday, I cut, sanded, drilled out the bolt holes, and put the first coat of sealant on the inner and outer transom boards. I also cut boards that I will later carpet to be bolted on top of the benches.

Hopefully by tomorrow morning the Gluvit will be good to go, and I can go ahead with the self etching primer, then the clean metal primer later that day. Got another 80 degree day coming up tomorrow and the self etching stuff only says it needs 30 min before a topcoat, so I should be good to get both done. Wish me luck!

That's good news! Thanks for the reply.

Update:

Hollis pressure-washing the last of the paint off.
IMG_1498.jpg

Reinforcing some existing patches with good old JB Weld.
IMG_1505.jpg

3 Rattle Cans of Rustoleum Self-Etching Primer.
IMG_1508.jpg

Exactly one quart of Rustoleum Clean Metal Primer.
IMG_1512.jpg

I underestimated how much it would matter that the Gluvit ran while it was curing... Good thing it's just a fishing boat!

The plan is to apply the first coat of paint tomorrow night after work. Now that the damn thing actually looks visually different, I finally feel like I'm making some progress!

Coming along very well.

I'm patiently waiting for the temps to warm, snow to melt and my little brother to get his new boat out of my garage so I can start on mine. It's just a little bigger than yours and this will be my second project boat.

Got the outside of the hull painted. Got the gluvit applied on the inside and have it primed as well. Going to apply a few coats of paint to the inside over the next few nights. I'll post pics once it's looking decent. Definitely not a factory paint job but it's good enough for who it's for. As long as it's water tight and doesn't scare the trout away, I'm okay with it!

Not the best paint job in the world, but there is not a single drop of water getting in. Took it out fishing for a few days last week and it was absolutely perfect. Couldn't be happier with it. :)

Great job on the Tinny, quite a change from the first pictures.

Hope it didn't scare the fish, or if it did it scared 'em right in the boat.:D

Great looking job. I like the way you have the inside of the boat fixed up. Neat and simple. I have an old 1954 Arkansas Traveler that I am working on that looks nearly just like you boat. I took six coats of paint off of it and instead of saying "not the best looking paint job", I am just going to leave it natural. I am going to paint the inside white, so I'll be able to say not the best looking paint job there. Your paint job looks great in the pictures. Ed Bell

Thanks guys! I sure put a ton of work into it and I'm excited about how it turned out. It was a great project for me and my son, and now we have a sturdy little boat that will provide years of trips to the mountain lakes. We had a blast working on it and will have many more blasts reeling in trophies. :)
