Friendly suggestion? Stop counting. Enjoy life instead. It's really not that hard if you simply redirect your priorities.

Re: 14 hours without a smoke and counting

After trying everything known to man to help you quit smokn I finally found one that works. The State just added another tax on cigs. Almost up to 6 bucks a pack. I had my last one last nite. The thought of paying $6 finally made me realize enough is enough. Thinking of a pipe well they got a cure for that to. It went up x4. I will miss most that smoke after a good meal. Found a cure for that to. Just don't quit eatn

December 24th 2008 was 1 year to the day i quit. March 13th 2009 was 1 year for the wife. Keep it up, dont let any one tell you you CANT do it, especially your brain... its the best thing we ever did, we saved 4500 dollars the first year and are going to Mexico on our old habits money. Re: 14 hours without a smoke and counting

Roughly 8 months for me. The first week I was a direct ***. I was just jonesing to much to concentrate on being polite. The 1st month I cheated with 2 smokes, one of which I only lit up and put out after a few drags.. it tasted HORRIBLE to me by the 3 week mark. Never touched another one. I think about it once in a while, but not really as a 'I need a smoke NOW!' kind of thing, more of a 'I miss smoking, but not the bad smell or shortness of breath' remenissing.

I go for weeks, sometimes a month completely forgetting I ever smoked nowadays. I read the article about cig taxes going up and thought, "Man, glad I don't smoke", instead of "Man, I'm glad I quit when I did". That in itself tells me I'm over it for keeps. And the shortness of breath.. MUCH improved, but not gone.. still have years for my lungs to recover from what I did to them.

Good luck, and cheating with a single cig does mean you have stopped quitting, so don't start back up again. Just don't give in to every urge, make sure it has been a good week or two, so you realize how bad they always were and always will be. I had an upset stomach all night after cheating with one cig 3 weeks into it. I'll never smoke again and I hope you don't either.. soon you'll agree.

Re: 14 hours without a smoke and counting

Check out these stats or better....print them off....post on your fridge....mark your milestones.
My three year old daughter told me that I should quit because "she didn't want me to die"....a persuasive argument for a 3 year old! ....that was 16 years ago....I've been 100% "clean" for that long.

According to the American Lung Association:

Benefits

When smokers quit, within twenty minutes of smoking that last cigarette the body begins a series of changes.

At 20 minutes after quitting:

blood pressure decreases

pulse rate drops

body temperature of hands and feet increases

At 8 hours:

carbon monoxide level in blood drops to normal

oxygen level in blood increases to normal

NE7800....you are ALREADY at normal blood O2 and CO levels, reduced pulse and blood pressure, and better body temp!!! Well done!

At 24 hours:

chance of a heart attack decreases

At 48 hours:

nerve endings start regrowing

ability to smell and taste is enhanced

The first year after quitting:

At 2 weeks to 3 months:

circulation improves

walking becomes easier

lung function increases

1 to 9 months:

coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue, shortness of breath decreases

1 year:

excess risk of coronary heart disease is decreased to half that of a smoker

Long-term Benefits of Quitting

At 5 years:

from 5 to 15 years after quitting, stroke risk is reduced to that of people who have never smoked.

At 10 years:

risk of lung cancer drops to as little as one-half that of continuing smokers

risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas decreases

risk of ulcer decreases

At 15 years:

risk of coronary heart disease is now similar to that of people who have never smoked

risk of death returns to nearly the level of people who have never smoked

Re: 14 hours without a smoke and counting

I smoked for 14 years and quit cold turkey when my daughter came around. I'm not going to lie, it sucked but I have not had another smoke since. I gained a few pounds, but after a few years of being nicotine free I then was able to focus on my eating habits and then lost 80 pounds over 2 years or so. Ended up running, and have done 3 1/2 marathons so far. It can be done, just takes some motivation (for me it was my daughter, and now I have a son too) and determination. After 5+ years without a smoke, I can't stand the smell and I don't have any more cravings. Be strong and good luck!!!!

Re: 14 hours without a smoke and counting

Last year I fell down with severe chest pains and now have 3 pieces of hardware in my chest and a week later my mother died. As of March 10th I've been a non smoker for a year and instead of burning up those dollars out on the patio, I used my my monthly cig money to pay for a 2008 Glastron GT-18 we bought April 2008. I used Chantix and the wife used the patch. Best decision we ever made and I told myself if I start smoking again the boat has to go. I will always have a boat parked in my driveway... ;) Good luck and just take it a day, a week, a month, a year at a time. If your mind is in the game you'll be fine in the end.

Well take your spare change container...... go outside and throw some into the road....... about 35 cents..... try that every time you have the urge. Got to figure a single smoke costs that much!

Actually you need to fight it. You are doing the best thing possible right now!

Keep up the good work!

When I quit I was looking for a job as a serial killer! I was in that kind of mood and I would have been a good one ;)

Re: 14 hours without a smoke and counting

ok.. thoughts come to mind,

nicotine is a stimulus interrupter, a drag on a cig is to prevent a smoker from feeling something else. er..?

I hear the Indian reservations are doing landslide internet sales since the gvmnt keeps raising taxes, and naturally, tax revenue has gone down.

I was in Russia when marlboro were $5 a pack in the states,
they were .40 in the FSU in stores, .20 from street corner vendors.

Abraham Lincoln said something about our vices being related to virtues, he was right.

I conclude from this America learned nothing from prohibition.!

Quitting smokes is a *****. All the well meaning advise to do something to take your mind off it don't work because its a compulsion driven by an obsession. But it might help to do something for someone else, anything that gets the mind off self is good. Keep slugging.

Keep busy, but try to avoid any overly stressful situations.

You are probably not into any exercise activity, so do some brisk walking
that will not be hard on yourself, but will still be healthy.

You can do it!
