Well, I have spent countless hours enjoying all of the resto threads and have caught the highly infectious rebuilding bug. The iboat community is amazing and very inspirational. I am going to document my restoration of a 1974 Klamath Aluminum boat. This is going to be a basic fishing boat running a 2008 Honda 9.9 and is going to be a relatively low budget resto as it is a basic boat with not much to replace or fix.

Completed:
-Stripped the old paint
-Sealed all seams and rivets with Gluvit
-Added a brass garboard drain in the transom
-Cut a new piece of plywood and coated with multiple coats of poly for exterior transom board
-Bucked all rivets
-Verified that boat does not leak
-Refinished oars with Spar Varnish
-Completely rebuilt trailer including new wiring and lights, new 3500# axle, wheels, tires, winch and paint.

To Do:
-Prime with Rustoleum marine metal primer (ordered and shipped today)
-Top coat with Rustoleum Battleship Gray (ordered and shipped today)
-Build a new interior (insert correct boat term here) transom board
-Replace all wood seats with either new plywood covered in Poly and painted or painted aluminum
-Build a fishing deck from the bow to the second bench seat (either plywood or aluminum) with lockable storage
-Add comfortable fishing seats (2)
-Add Rod holders and pole rack
-Add Decking (something like Huron Angler's)
I am using all stainless fasteners with 5200 to minimize any metal reactions and leaks. Any comments, suggestions or recommendations are welcome.

Nice work. Before you commit to the raised front deck, put a mock-up in and test it on the water...don't want to raise the center of gravity too much and make the boat tippy from side to side. Putting a removable plank/bench from the bow platform to the second seat, with removable fishing seat, accomplishes the same thing as a raised forward deck...unless you want to be fishing/sitting right in the bow.

TMCALAVY-

Thanks for the heads up on the fishing platform. I would hate to put it all together and have it capsize the boat. Prior to teardown I did take it to the lake and layed a plank across the bow seat and the second seat from the bow to check it out. It made the boat a bit more tippy when standing on it but not much when sitting there...I don't think that we would spend much time standing up there but figure it would be a good place for the lab to lay during the duck hunting season. That is a great idea to make it removeable.

I am waiting for the rest of the Zinc Chromate primer to show up so I can finish that step!

Wear a respirator when using that primer...nasty stuff, can be hard on your insides.

Great advice on the respirator! I started it without but after about 5 seconds I was running outside the garage. I put a box fan up and borrowed a respirator from my father to finish it up tonight. Will post pics of the fully primed boat as soon as it clears out in the garage. Hard to take pics with the full face respirator on.

Kyle it's great to see some pictures of your rig...she's a nice looking hull:)

You've got some pretty high sides- sometimes I could use more gunwale when my 4-year-old son wants to splash and lean over the side, but that's what life jackets are for I guess. If he falls into some cold water he will learn is my take on it:D

How was the installation on that plug? That's one thing I've been considering for a while now and want to get something similar. Did it seal up easily for you?

Love the picture with those conifers in the background...any redwoods in your area?

Mike-
Thank you for the kind words. I hear you about the sides my three old year niece is always trying to climb out and go swimming.

The plug was really easy to install. I used a hole saw to cut the hole and then coated the garboard drain and stainless bolts with 5200 and it went right together. The hardest part was cleaning up the 5200 that squished out....man that stuff is sticky.

No redwoods but lots of big oaks on the west side of the state and big yellow pine and cedar on the east side. I am a bit jealous of all the fish you have been catching. I went out two weeks ago and got skunked! First time for everything I guess LOL.

Here are some updated pics showing the second coat of Rustoleum Battleship Gray Marine paint. It is covering a coat of Gluvit, a coat of zinc chromate and a coat of Rustoleum Marine Metal Primer. Next up new transom and seat boards. Any suggestions how long I should let the paint cure prior to mounting the transom board?

Cheers,
Kyle

Kyle, sounds like you got skunked on a trip and decided...well I might as well finish my boat restoration since I'm not catching anything LOL, the boat looks great in the grey. I'm thinking about a blue/grey paint job for mine.

It should set pretty well in 24-48hrs, if it's still tacky maybe give it 36hrs.

I've got hole saw bits for my drill so I'm going to go ahead and install a drain. That will make cleaning the boat easier than having to flip it after spraying it down. Portaging thru some mud on the river bank is a dirty operation:D

Did you roll the paint on with foam rollers?

The 5200 should work well in the transom bolts as well, are you planning on that too?

Mike,

That is about the way it happened. I went out and got skunked so I figured maybe the old paint had bad voodoo LOL. I rolled the paint on with one of the foam rollers and used a foam brush to get all the hard to reach spots. I really looked at the different options for adding a plug and finally decided on the Garboard drain style as the transom skin is pretty thin and I really liked the idea of having a larger surface area to seal against than with the aluminium or brass tube style. I am planning on using the 5200 for all of the bolts....it has become my new duct tape. It seems like I am using it on everything.

I was in the same boat as you are with the mud in the boat. That is really the only reason I added the drain. It will sure be nice to be able to wash it out and let it drain instead of having to take the motor off to turn it upside down.

Cheers,
Kyle

Re: 14' Klamath Tin Boat Resto Thread

Hi, I'm new to boating and I just picked up a Klamath Trailorboat 14'. I'm fixing it up, and I find this thread very helpfull, but I cannot see the pics. Is there any way you could make the pics available? You know what they say, a pic is worth a thousand words...

Thanx.
