Re: 14' Larivee restore

Almost forgot..............Here she is....rolled right over..we flipped her tonight(me & 3 guys)...tipped her right up off the trailer on transom, repositioned ourselves & flat down on her belly. Looks like all I really have to do is that 5" spot on the keel...then sand, sand, sand! Off next 2 days & weather warming back up to 70's, so should be able to glass.

Hmmm , Trying to picture how the r/r installs.. Does it have a lip that tucks in under the bottom edge of the cap ?
Seeing as your getting ready to flip . Can you fasten the cap on with some long screws and wedges . Then when ya flip you can fill the void with caulk or pb . Do you think you will ever need to pull the cap back off for anything in your lifetime ? I glassed mine back on but I have no wood structurally to ever have to worry about replacing .

Awesome work! Weather's been downright miserable up here so not much getting done to mine. It's supposed to start warming up on Saturday but won't be enough to do any lay-up. Boat's looking great there and I can't wait to see her done! Keep it up and we'll be lining up at your door for help!

Flip was quick & painless...posting pics & updating posts always throws me into a technology coma! Yeah, I'm not sure that the cap will come off again in my lifetime. Think I can fix her up without too much effort, said no one ever!! I'll get you a pic of rubrail track to give you better idea...going to be a little harder now(upside down)..but I'll get it.

Been peeking in off and on...life has been getting in the way...
Things are looking ship shape over here...great job on the flip and very good to see minimal repair work is required on the hull bottom.
At the rate you are moving along, you should have it all prepped, sanded, primed and painted inside of a couple of days...;):D...
That is a fun looking new toy, enjoy!
Oh, and after seeing your mad glassing skills, you will have no problem getting the bow cap/rub rail fitting prettier than a shiny new penny!
Keep up the great progress!

Re: 14' Larivee restore

I know 95% of you will hate me for saying this, but today's weather was perfectly perfect! Clear blue skies, warmed to about 72 degrees. Got busy, busy early. Keel damage got grounded out...sanded gel out from keel 1 lapstrake out on both sides to accommodate new glass. Used 1708 in very low spots to regain strength & build up for contour...then finished with some torn csm. Pulled her out in the sun & went golf cart ridin' in the woods with my 13yr old(we didn't get much homeschooling done today...shhhh!). Done & showered by 5 p.m. Off again tomorrow. Plan to continue sanding existing gel out from keel. Using 60 grit..ok?? Seems to be aggressive enough to scuff but not enough to gouge or strip completely. Gonna make quick work of this stage. Hoping not to have her on her belly more than a month. HAPPY FRI-DER-DAY!!! (couple of before n' after todays progress pics)

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Haha, woody....yeah I would "hate" me too...This morning is even better than yesterday. Supposed to get around 75 today. Heading out to do some sanding. When I'm done, probably do some more sanding. And who knows, after work tomorrow, might just even do some sanding just to switch things up a bit. I've put a "deadline" on myself to get this girl off her belly & upright & it ain't very long off. Gotta keep plugging away. 80 degree weather will be here soon. So listen fellas, is there any difference to prepping for paint vs. prepping for gelcoat? My intention is to keep sanding(surprise!) with 60 grit, faring where necessary(keel & transom repair). I would really like to spray gel for 2 reasons: more durable to nicks & gentle beachings & I would like to cross this art off my bucket list. I have been trying to find some good threads about spraying gel. I think ondarvr, yachtdr, oops are probably top 3. Sounds like I can use HF pot but not sure that the tip(I think it's 1.8) that it comes with is big enough. Also not 100% sure yet about thinning(what to use & %%). I know you guys are mostly painters vs gellers, but any suggestions would be appreciated. Fer now, a sanding I will go!!

Re: 14' Larivee restore

For paint you'd probably want to use finer paper, paint is thinner then gelcoat.

Gelcoat isn't paint so you NEED to spray more mil thickness then you need because you'll cut & buff it more then you would after paint. That removes more material. If you look thru Trooper82 & Decker's threads, they often wanted it just a bit more fair, smooth, needed to remove pin holes or whatever, and cut too deep exposing the resin & glass. It will even show thru gelcoat if the gel is thin enough but not yet completely removed. So then you respray & start the process of cut & buff over again. And repeat as necessary.

I think they both did GREAT work having never done it (Trooper) or it's been a very long time (Decker). But you might ask both to give you a review of their methods, trials & tribulations & whether they'd choose to gel if they could get a do over. YD & Oops both dropped great gel tips all over the place @iboats. They were great resources & their absence is noticed.

If I thought I could successfully spray gel, I probably would try. I am not to that point, but I won't have access to a compressor of sufficient size. When I get to that point, I might roll it on. Either way, I would start my gelcoat work on the hull bottom (as you are) and as it's the hull bottom on a non-show boat, I won't be overly concerned about making it perfect.

I know how well & good it is to plan to let the minor stuff go. I also know myself & the resto process well enough that when it comes down to it, it is extremely difficult to 'let it go', 'it's not that bad', 'it's the BOTTOM of the hull' and not overwork it trying to get it as perfect as I possibly can.

Help ^^^?

Re: 14' Larivee restore

Roger that, JB. My son had just about the same boat a couple years ago(you can find on my homepage). He rolled ALL of his gel & yes it's orange peely, but he just don't care. Lately, he has talked about he & I going to sandy(wet)-town on it to see if we can get her to shine, but the boat, orange peel or not, is not only a beauty, but nautically sound. Just after I posted this morning, he came in trying to talk me out of the whole spray gelcoat thing. He has a point...such a small boat, easier just to roll...who cares what it looks like. I'm torn at this time. Just trying to explore my options.

Re: 14' Larivee restore

The main reason I chose paint over gell was I did not think I could do a decent job with the gell . Paint was less money and relatively easy . Just the thought of all those strakes on mine makes me cringe on how bad my arms and shoulders would feel with a ll the required sanding and buffing gell . With paint it,s instant shine ! :) When on the trailer touch up is really easy . Gell is most definitely tougher just a bit more work I would think ..
Which ever way ya go with your skills it,s gunna look great !

you're right, sam...with the strakes, definte turn off if you're gonna have to sand it & buff it to a shine. my son has yet to do that to his & the fish don't seem to mind. def more durable with gel. we'll see. back to sanding. got another good hour in me.
