Hey gang,

Just boring sanding the inside of hull AKA primer prep...

I found this cool DC breaker panel for nav lights, bilge pump, and fish finder. Also adding a 12v recepticle for charging what not... I needed a change of pace so used the template and cut out the hole.

When I redid my S14 DLX I was able to find on ebay some nice wire cabling. Found some marine 14/3 and 14/2. The 14/2 I was able to fish thru the top rail from the bow to the stern where the stern light was and used that to wire the bow light. Then ran the 14/3 from the stern light back to the steering console and to the 3 position switch for the lights.

That worked out really well and helped keep everything nice and tidy.

Thanks for the ideas brutha bonz...

Today I finished sanding hull interior, 50% acetic acid bath, filled hull checked for leaks (none), full rinse, dry in the sun, and shot with SE primer on any bare aluminum....

Re: 14' Sea Nymph Oh Yeah! Now 1971 LUND 14-S

Thanks brutha PMC!

Well I was gonna shoot SE primer on the bottom of inside of hull this eve and noticed something interesting with the Gluvit. It started to delaminate / flake off the surface of the aluminum where the application was thin? It almost seems brittle not flexible like can states... Maybe I purchased a bad lot? This fun is after following all the Gluvit prep/application instructions verbatim, sanding, a bath in 50:50 acetic acid (vinegar) and water, and rinse before primer. I have more hours sanding that crap that I care to remember.... So I decided to NUKE the Gluvit! I hated the stuff from the get go! :puke:

After 1.5 hours with a propane torch gently heating, a good scraper, and a wire brush the stuff peels right off... The PO said the boat had no leak issues, so I guess I'll verify that... If I find a leak I'll repair it with 5200 and rivets!

Good times!

Sorry about the gluvit mishap Bear . I have not done the tin thing yet so I can't be of much help . You'll get it worked out !

Dang, brutha, that truly SUX!
I guess if the tin boats don't cut you, they can pull an old fiberglass boat trick on you and decide to delaminate...:facepalm::mad-new:...
I hope some of the tin dudes pop in and have some similar horror story to tell, I would be very curious to know why that happened...
Hope things work out better the second go around...

Dang making some progress in here! Looking great!

Sux about the gluvit, and it seems you did all the right prep too. Couldn't tell ya as I have never used it... Hope it works out for you.

Yeah don't think I've ever seen gluvut do anything like that before. If I had it wouldn't be used again by me.

I wonder if the problem is putting it down and then trampling around on the floor over - flexing it. I'm not so sure about using it on the smaller boats that don't have flooring to limit the foot traffic on the dried product.

Re: 14' Sea Nymph Oh Yeah! Now 1971 LUND 14-S

Thanks for the condolences doods...

I don't think I'll be re-applying Gluvit again...

Per Gluvit states it's a flexible barrier coat. I never really tromped around much at all... This is the statement from their web-page.

Gluvit barrier coat seals and protects hulls and decks. Provides superior protection for fiberglass, wood, aluminum, and steel. Seals leaky seams and rivets in aluminum hulls, and leaks around fiberglass cabins or decks. Hard protective coating flexes with hull movements to bridge and seal hairline cracks.

Regardless I'm removing all of it....

That's certainly strange... I know its a dead issue and you are moving on, but I wonder if application temps had anything to do with it, since you live in the frozen tundra of Wisconsin. I know you are working in your garage and not outside, but that was just a thought.

Again, its a theoretical discussion, because you hated that stuff from the moment you started working with it. I do think a sealer of some sort (Gluvit, Coat-it) is a good medicine for a nice dry boat/bilge, but hopefully you won't need it.

My garage was 70 F when I did the application, and while curing...

Hey Gang,

So the last few weeks I spent removing gluvit with a torch wire brush and beer...

I sold the Sea Nymph last weekend so it was spent repairing leaks properly with 5200 and closed blind end rivets, and rigging it for the new owner...

I finally had the entire hull gluvit free, clean, and self etching primer applied to any bare aluminum....

Yesterday sanded the entire hull interior, vac, wax de-greaser solvent bath...

Finally today I applied metal primer! :)

Hey Gang,

Small update...

No I didn't take the Lund to the land fill...

I've been having a busy summer and it's simply on the back burner... However I've been sanding the bottom in preparation of SharkHide http://www.sharkhide.com/mpinfo.html and changin the Lund classic red to white...

I'll get the Lund finished over the winter... Winter what a nasty word! SORRY!
