Re: Purchased : Starcraft Holiday 14' ! Official restoration has begun.

I blew thru all my days off until january

You and me both:D I will be taking some unpaid days off to get out on the water and work on my trailers.

Your progress is great, starting with the trailer is always a good idea. Can't wait to see the boat part get going:)

Any leads on a motor yet?

Re: Purchased : Starcraft Holiday 14' ! Official restoration has begun.

I went to harbor freight yesterday and bought the cheapest air paint gun i could buy. $15 got me a wicked awesome paint gun which shoots rustoleum out of the quart cans that i got from walmart like no ones business. I also picked up a cheap fume mask which for $15 also works very well. I don't smell any fumes while painting. Warning, if you spray with rustoleum or any paint for that matter, make sure to wear breathing equipment. I forgot to put my mask on when i primed the tongue last night and when i took a shower later, my nose was filled with primer paint. I can only imagine how my lungs look. And the fumes are NOT good for you.

So i wire wheeled the trailer tongue and winch post with the cheap wire wheel my dad got from harbor freight that works fantastic. I primed the trailer tongue last night and tonight i painted the trailer arm and remembered to prime the winch post.
Tomorrow the trailer tongue gets painted a 2nd coat of white and the winch post gets it's first coat of white. I went WAY to heavy on the primer on the tongue last night but it didn't run as its thick stuff. So this morning i took the tongue outside of the garage and left it baking in the sun in the 95 + degree heat upstate NY had today. When i got home it was good and dry. I recommend 2 lighter coats instead of 1 heavy like i did. Although the primer was dry afterwards from the heat of today, i think it would have cured ( hardened more ) if it had been applied in 2 thinner coats. The problem is that my patience is limited and progress has slowed in the last 48 hours as painting is fast and drying time is not.
After tomorrow, the work stops till after the weekend. Weekends are family time. Weeknights after work is my play time with this project.

Thinking ahead, where do i get stainless steel staples for the bunk carpet ?

More pics to follow once additional progress is made enough to post about.

It's looking good. I just got some SS staples at Home Depot for some vinyl work. On my trailer, I used short galvanized roofing nails to fasten the carpet to the PT bunks several years ago and it's all holding up real well.

This is what I got but I'm not sure if they would be long enough to fasten carpet:

I used the same ones LL posted. They say "not for marine use" but we all use 'em anyway. I'm thinking they mean "not for marine, like saltwater everyday and stuff" :p

I saw the "not for marine use" thing, but then they don't have any other SS options, so I figure some SS is better than no SS at all.

Re: Purchased : Starcraft Holiday 14' ! Official restoration has begun.

I have to run something by you guys .. i posted this below in the Johnson/Evinrude forums but i'm impatient and you guys seem to be more along my kind of thought ... so the BELOW is exactly what i posted in the other forum .. if you could PLEASE tell me if this shounds like a good motor or not.. i would really appreciate it ...

So i am looking for a 50hp johnson or evinrude for my 1977 14' starcraft holiday restoration.

I found this guy selling a boat, trailer, and this outboard for $1,000 asking price. He said he would do $800 bottom line for all.

I would keep the trailer, cut the boat up, and keep the outboard and controls of course.

First. What am i getting into what the owner claims to be a 1984 unit? Are they well known for problems etc?

He said he is a mechanic and replaced all the plugs, carb, and linkages .. the carb was newer but used off his buddies old 50. The linkages were new.

The pee hole had NO water pressure .. not even a trickle .. until he held the muffs on tightly so the water leaking past the muffs stopped. Then the pee hole shot out water very well after a couple seconds of him holding the muffs.

Also there didnt seem to be much of any water coming out of the center of the prop. Just in the areas highlighted by the yellow arrows in the below ppicture. Is that typical ? I thought all water from the engine made it's way out of the center of the prop like the exhaust ?
It sounded great. Started right up. Engine seemed fairly cold to the touch. The controls are OMC. Would that be correct for a 1984 Johnson ?

The tilt is manual which sucks. What can i do about that ? Should i bother to do anything ?
I'm lookin for any help guys . i'm clueless on outboards.

HELP.

There's easily $800 worth of stuff there. You should be able to add tilt/trim with a used unit on ebay. Didn't see one on there today but they do come up. I think that motor has a cooling issue but it shouldn't be too hard to sort out. That would be a great motor for your SC. That boat doesn't look bad and "FREE" sign will probably get rid of it so you don't have to cut it up.

Re: Purchased : Starcraft Holiday 14' ! Official restoration has begun.

That would be a nice outboard for your rig. It's not so heavy that lacking TnT is not a dealbreaker in my opinion. I've manually raised and lowered my 80hp Mercury successfully a few times.

Sounds like the impeller should be replaced and make sure it is pumping enough water. That is an OMC motor so the controls are correct.

You could add a hydraulic bracket to trim/tilt the motor but they are pricey.

I'm not sure it's worth $800 for just the motor though. If the trailer is in good shape then it might be worth it.

Re: Purchased : Starcraft Holiday 14' ! Official restoration has begun.

this motor is a 1987. i just looked at, and passed on, a very similar 50hp yesterday.....el carnicero had been there and beat on the flywheel with a Large Hammer, cut instead of disconnecting wires etc.

BUT before i went to look at motor, i checked prices for common replacement items....fuel pump, carb kit, impeller, kit. i was absolutely blown away at how comparatively CHEAP the parts were....much less than equiv parts for my '89 rude 8hp. Sierra carb kit, $13; fuel pump kit, $19, ignition power pack, $64, impeller, $12. if the motor i looked at weren't so beat, i would have bought it.

HA is right, you don't need power TNT for this one. it's light and only 2 cylinders....i'd guess whole motor weighs well under 200

Re: Purchased : Starcraft Holiday 14' ! Official restoration has begun.

Things have been going slow since last week when i dropped off the trialer frame at the sand blaster. I'm waiting on the guy to get the work done so i can bring the trailer home, paint it, put it all together, and get the boat on it and start tearing into the boat. Right now the boat is sitting on jack stands and tires.

In the mean time, just to keep you all updated. I bought that cheap $5 HVLP? sprayer from my local Harbor Freight. They have one within 20 minutes of me. Boy i feel guilty buying that chinese junk but it sure is real easy on my wallet.

The Rustoleum rusty metal primer and white protective enamel semi gloss spray on very very well with that cheapy gun. Altho i noticed you have to spend a good amount of time cleaning out every crevice of the gun after each spray or the thing clogs up and barely sprays. Also it's a MUST to thin the paint with at least a little bit of acetone. Some guys are using mineral spirits but it will take for ever to dry and acetone is much thinner and drys FAST.

The Rustoleum takes a long time to cure. It has been a couple weeks since i painted my trailer tongue and i just checked it and gave it the thumb nail test. If you dig your thumb nail in to the paint and it doesn't dig into the paint but just glides over it, the paint is well cured. So it takes about 2 weeks for full cure. Thats what oil based paint is all about. I would bet it will be twice as hard another 2 weeks from now.

I asked for some help in the trailer section regarding the springs on my trailer. They are odd sized. Eye on one side and slipper on the other and 32" long. I could not find any online this size until the last minute and they were $16 a peice from ONE web site out of many on google. I was hesitant to buy them so i took my springs to a local long time spring shop and they took them apart and said there is nothing wrong with them, put them back together, and put new rebound clips on them. I brought them home and shot them with vehicle undercoating i got from local auto parts store. I didn't shake up the can well and the undercoat is still kinda tacky 3-4 days later. I hope it sets up soon. I also replaced the thin white plastic bushings with a set i found at Tractor supply. I probably should replace the bolt on each side as well once the trailer is back together.

The fenders, misc small trailer parts, light brackets etc are wire brushed, primed, and painted with 3 coats of white. I found that if you paint light coats thinned lightly with acetone, the coats of paint dry and cure faster and harder.

Here is my garage with parts hanging off wires. I'm psyched but i need to get this trailer frame back so i can finish it and get started on painting the boat. I have to hurry as summer is almost gone and i need warm weather to cure the paint on the boat before it gets to cold. I'll be cutting it REAL REAL close and the project may stall until spring if i can't get it painted in the next few weeks. The garage has a wood stove but i need solid temps not fluctuating. And i don't have anyone to tend the wood stove while i'm at work.
I should have the frame back by wednesday evening at the latest i HOPE.

Tomorrow i'll tinker on the bunks. I have some old decent carpet and pressure treated 2x4's just waiting to be put together. Should not take more than an hour. I already purchased short galvanized roofing nails for the bunk carpet. Guys are using them in the Trailer forums and they are holding up for a long time. I'll also use some liquid nails to keep the carpet snug on the bunks.
I hope to start tearing into the boat monday the 27'th. Cutting it REAL close.

Re: Purchased : Starcraft Holiday 14' ! Official restoration has begun.

FINALLY !

Bare metal after sand blasting. Cost me $150. Well worth it. I'm still sore from attempting to wire brush the frame. I think i still have wire bristles sticking in me somewhere.

DSC01402.jpg

Banged back to shape, structural crossmembers welded in place, and primed.

DSC01406.jpg

Did i mention that i picked this frame up at 530. Got home around 6pm. Started welding. Stopped to go buy a third boat. The one in previous posts. I got it for $700 bones for those paying attention! Then came home, finished welding, and primed.
Here it is 12:34am. I'm about to hit the sack. Tomorrow flip over and prime places i missed. Then 2-3 coats of white semi gloss. Then put it all back together and wire it up.
THEN FINALLY ONTO THE BOAT!!! God i hate set backs. Argh.

You'll thank yourself later when your trailer is all done and ready when you're finished with the boat. Some of us ;) weren't that swift.

Re: Purchased : Starcraft Holiday 14' ! Official restoration has begun.

Well it's time for an update.

I have really good news and some bad news.

First the good news.
I finished the trailer on friday night. But since weekends are family time, i didn't get a chance to put the boat back on the trailer until half an hour ago. The lights work the first time around. I used automotive weatherproof butt connectors with the glue inside the heat shrink. Then i used black heat shrink tubing ontop of the weatherproof butt connectors, then i used liquid tape on top of that. I'll be DANGED if the wiring goes in the next 20 years! I took a short ride and the boat and trailer track very well after the rebuild. No problems
Pics.

DSC01407.jpg

DSC01409.jpg

I just have to get it registered as homemade as the PO lost the registration.

Next for some REALLY good news. For those that have followed, i purchased a P.O.S. 1972 16' Silverline fiberglass trihull, with trailer, and 50hp johnson for $700. I am going to give the boat away on craigslist, keep the trailer for my 68 Jet Star, and put the 50 hp johnson on the '77 Holiday pictured. Also I'll strip the hydraulic steering for my 68 jet star. Anyways the super good news is that i dropped the boat off to a local marine 6 blocks from my house. I told them to look at the outboard in and out and tell me what i have. They charged me 1 hour labor, checked the waterpump and said it was fine but to replace within the next year. They said even thought it looks new, the PO didn't replace it so they have no idea how old it is. Along with checking the water pump they replaced the lower units oil. Also they said the manual tilt is tight, the cyclinders are at 130 compression in each cylinder and they ran it and said i have a FINE ENGINE.
I am SOOO excited! a 50 HP 1987 Johnson on a 400lb 14' 77 Holiday! I should be running so fast on the water come splash time next spring that i'll have to be careful not to travel back in time!
Next the bad news. The weather isn't holding up in upstate NY and i don't think that the boat will get painted this year. I am already pushing it as it is. I have to gut the boat, flip, prep, and paint all within the next 2 weeks. I can't see it happening 2-3 hours a night mondays thru thursdays in the next 2 weeks. But i will certainly try. I also have to build a outboard stand, unrig the outboard and winterize, unrig remote, gas tank, battery, etc. And either give away or junk the silverline before snow hits which could be a few weeks away.
Here are pics of the silverline and outboard.

0914001906.jpg

0914001904.jpg

If i could just get the boat painted, i would have all winter to work on the interior. But the paint has to cure in warm weather and i won't have much better than high 50's and low 60's at best for the next couple weeks. If i just got the boat delivered a week faster, and if the sand blaster didn't take 2 weeks to get the trailer back to me i would have been golden. But alas, i can not complain as everything has gone well so far. I wish i had a heated garage to work in! Wish me luck.

oh yea .. ANYONE near Albany, NY want a FREE 16' 1972 Silverline Trihull ?

Re: Purchased : Starcraft Holiday 14' ! Official restoration has begun.

Chris why don't you just gut it and work on it during the winter? Unless you want to try and use it before the winter sets in. You can gut it, flip it and prep it for paint. Meanwhile you can make the floors (from patterns) and get them sealed. Same for transom. You can polish all trim, get accessories ready, clean anything else you need. When or if you get a warm place to put the boat to paint you will be ready. When its painted you will have all the interior ready. My point is, don't let the winter stop you, there is always a way.;)
