I started my Evinrude over the past weekend and it spit, coughed, stalled? I pumped the bulb up and it ran for 30 seconds and stalled again. If I raise the idle arm up it runs longer till I lower arm then stalls. Only sstarts again with choking it. Could it be the fuel pump? How long do they last? What exactly runs the pump keeping it working, pumping the fuel into the carbs? Please any advise will be Greatly Appreciated. Thank You!

run comp check ,check for air leaks in line check primer bulb .run on remote tank .if carbs are not fresh ya need to build them , make sure your carbs are tight, spray a little premix into each carb if it picks up ya have carb prob
test fro spark on all cyls ,then repost . make sure your throttle plates are closeing all the way then move on to fuel pumps

What year is it ???
To test fuel pump function take the hose out to the carbs off, put a temp hose on to a bowl or other container and turn it over (on the muffs if not in the water) to preserve the impeller and see if the pump is functioning. Should be squirting out a healthy flow. Check all fuel connections to make sure you are not sucking air.

Re: 140 Eninrude spitting stalling?

It is a 1979 140 rebuilt in 1986. I removed carbs and were totally clean. Has lots of spark. I did notice when I first start engine after squeezing bulb tight it runs normal for 30 seconds, and then I checked primer bulb and it isn't tight? I am thinking a fuel pump next? I will remove the fuel line to carbs and check flow. Thank You all for your input. Any more ideas, input will be appreciated.

Take the cover off the two carbs so that you can watch the throttle plates. They need to be 100% synchronized with each other through the whole range of motion from idle to WOT.

Be sure that your warm up lever engages both the throttles and the timing advance when you lift it (the timing advance is more important than the throttle during warmup).

Re: 140 Eninrude spitting stalling?

all good advice. the bulb does not stay hard, it softens when the fuel pumps starts to draw fuel thru it. so fuel pump is pumping, whether it is pumping enough is to be proven. agree with check spark and compression, along with carb sync.

i'm going to bet your carbs are not as clean as you think. did you remove the jets, all 4 of them, and clean them? there fuel pick up is in the bottom of the carb bowl, with ethanol in the todays fuel, it deteriorates the inside of the fuel lines. this ends up in the bottom of the carb bowls. and eventually clogs the pick ups and jets.

the cure is to clean the carbs properly install new rebuild kits. while doing this you replace all fuel lines with B1 rated alcohol resistant fuel lines, from tank to carbs. see carb cleaning in the TOP SECRET FILE.

I checked Fuel pump pressure and it is working perfect. I will be removing carbs and rechecking for any dirt in carbs. Thank You for all your great troubleshooting ideas that i will be checking today.
