Re: 140 evenrude

dave you probably have a seal blown in the trim, not knowing the year and model number of the engine, this is a guess. hopefully the shift cable needs adjusting. disconnect the shift cable, and put it in reverse, and see if it will engage. if it does engage, adjust the cable, the cable if aged may need to be replaced, if it doesn't engage, you have a lower unit problem, probably a clutch dog. hope it's the cable.

Look on the starboard side transom bracket, from the outside, for a recessed, slotted screw. That is a manual release screw. Turn it counterclockwise about 4 full turns and you should be able to manually lift the motor and lock it in the fully tilted position.

When you retighten the manual release screw, be sure to torque to spec. 45-55 inch pounds

Once the motor is raised you reach and fill the oil reservoir from the fill plug opening until it overflows slightly, close everything and cycle the motor up and down several times. Then repeat the whole process to determine if additional fluid is needed. Keep adding fluid until it will no longer accept it. By then, any leaks should be apparent.
