Does anyone know what the estimated shop time should be for replacing a head gasket on an I/O Merc. I have a 140 hp 4 cyl.

Welcome aboard!

It's a lot of guess work without seeing the engine and boat and access.... etc.

It is a simple and straight forward job IF... and this is a big "if"... the mechanic has easy access and there are no rust and corrosion issues. If access is good and everything comes off with no problems, it shouldn't take more than 2 or 3 hours. If the bolts are rusted up, then.... well, you get the picture. :(

Thank you all for your answers. My mechanic charged me for 2.5 hours and I watched him tear down to the gasket in 30 minutes. Easy access, no rusted bolts, everything came apart no problems. Head gasket was blown. Then he put it back together and realized the manifold gasket was blown too so tore apart again for a charge of 2 hrs and then tore apart again to replace valve cover gasket for a total of 6.5 hours. I was not happy at $90./hr. But thanks for the answers.

Get another mechanic!!

You cannot remove the head without removing the manifold and removing the valve cover gasket. You put new gaskets on when you re-install them. There is no "realized the gasket is blown" and having to tear it back apart.

WOW!!! I would be fighting for a few hours knocked off that bill. New gaskets EVERYTIME those parts are removed any good mechanics knows that. One time tear down and reinstall. I would take that bill back to the service manager and fight for it.
