Instead of throwing parts at this motor, you really need to learn how to diagnose.

And you really need to stop whineing about the hourly rate. The mechanic doesn't make 100/hr, that's the shops rate for his time.
If you looked at actual costs of employment/employees, you'd see what i'm talking about. Take your own personal salary for instance. If you are employeed by a company, and you have benefites, your actuall cost of employment to your company is typically close to double your salary. So if you make 60K (pre-tax of course) a year at XYZ company, it costs the company closer to 120K to employ you. The company pays part of your insurance, matches your fica, pays into unemployment because of you, pays into a general libility insurance plan for every employee, the list goes on.

Now lets say It's my shop, and i'm billing myself out at 100/hr
If I'm honest with my taxes, the fed gets about 25% of that. So you basically paying my income tax.
Now i'm down to $75
If i'm honest with my taxes, the state another takes 5% of the hundred.
Now I'm down to $70
I have to pay my own health insurance... that's at least another 10% of my pay, now i'm down to $60
Now out of that 60, i have to pay into unemployment, I have to have a general liability plan, I have to pay rent, and heat, and electric, my Iboats only internet connection.... Now i'm down to $30.
Now I have to buy tools, or pay for the ones that are sitting on the credit card at 22%. I probably have 30K tied up in tools right now.
If I only have my 30$ an hour that i'm making, It's going to take me 1000+ billable hours to pay for all those tools. Good thing there are 8760 hour in a year. But if you take away the hours that i'm sleeping, eating, drunk etc... there's not that many REAL hours in a year.
Oh yeah... lets talk about all the time that I give away for free. Answering phones, answering peoples dumb questions, cutting people deals on jobs that are mega-hours.

Man... I hope I start making money on all those expensive boat parts, because aside from the business, I have to feed myself and pay for my Homes rent, heat, electricity, porno only internet connection, Beer, taxes.....

I think I'm going to up my rate to 200/hr. Because I work awefully hard to be lower middle class.

Look at my signature... if you have an older boat, the chances of it having more than 1 problem goes way up.

I could'nt even begin to tell you how many boats I see that have ignition problems and fuel/carb problems at the same time. Problem is... is I can't diagnose a fuel problem until I have an engine that makes compression and a working ignition system. Very common for me to have to R&R packs, triggers, stators, even the occasional flywheel to get a working ignition system, only to find out it still runs like crap because all the carbs are half clogged.

A good mechanic is as hard to find as a good doctor--as you have found out. I don't think $100 an hour is that unreasonable by today's wages for a REAL mechanic. They have all sorts of problems to fix that pop up like broken bolts, brittle plastic parts, etc. SOme jobs they come out good on, some they go in the hole on---all according to what breaks. They also have the overhead of a shop, heating/AC, insurance, etc. Mechanics aren't doing the work for fun. They have to make a living, too. I don't have any problem paying a person for their knowledge and skill-----if they actually have it. However, with F-R and others here, I rarely need a mechanic. I figure they save me about $1000 a year.:)

I hope you get your problem fixed. THose powerpacks can surely be pesky.

I agree with you 100 %
