I believe that engine is a 3.0 liter version of the 2.5 Iron Duke (Pontiac / Corp GM engine). Some parts will be interchangable, but the majority of the parts that normally require servicing would be marine specific- alternator, carb, ignition, exhaut manifolds.

Rather than try to figure out what is or what is not common, just buy it over the 'net from places like IBoats and other places that sell Merc / OMC etc parts.

So basically the internal parts of the engine are similar to the Iron Duke?

forget "Iron Duke" - that marketing term confuses wrench twisters and parts people to no end. It was used for several engines that shared zero parts with your motor. zero.

Only a few parts from a 1960's Chevy II 153 will properly suit your 140 Mercruiser , like oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket and timing cover gasket.
An oil filter part number about the only useful auto/marine cross reference in this application.

Nope,... The GM/ Ponitac motor is a 151cid....
The Marine/ Chevy 2.5l is a 153cid....
2 Very Different motors...

The Iron Duke is an Over/ Misused term that really means Nothing.......

You may get lucky at a Napa store. They can get some marine and some industrial parts.

Yes, if you know exactly what you are looking for... All the internals are GM parts, with GM part numbers, so yeah they should be able to get them, but you are not going to be able to cross the 140 to a specific year/model of car or truck.

Napa and Car-Quest have marine catalogs, so they can look it up there, but you will most likely be paying a "marine" price. A machine shop would defiantly be able to break the engine down and crossreference over to less expensive auto parts, that are the same thing as the 140 part, without the "marine" up charge,,, if they are available.

If you can cross reference your marine parts to automotive parts (talking about engine internals) you most likely will save money. I replaced all the rocker arms on my 140 during rebuild and the marine price was something like $15 each, auto part was $2 each, exact same part.

Just be aware there are many automotive external engine parts that will fit and make the engine run, but they are not up to marine specifications, could will wear out easily or create a dangerous situation.

that's cool about the rockers....

your original inquiry was about the Chevy II 153 cubic inch,
the 140 Mercruiser is a 181 cubic inch engine.
different bore, different crank

your 140 Mercruiser crank .... was never in a Chevy vehicle

rebuild kits for the 140 Mercruiser are available

spending much time piecing the kit together yourself from random Chevy part numbers will likely end up costing same as the kit . The kits are usually heavy discounted vs. individual line item prices

If you are rebuilding, be aware the kit and machining labor may end up costing you more than some of the rebuilt 3.0's available out there, but doing it yourself can be rewarding and you'll control the quality of the assembly

The rockers are an odd one too since they are not a 1.5-1 ratio, something like 1.75-1. I just looked them up and they are no longer $2, more like $3-4 for the rocker, ball and nut, still better then $15.

(Come to think of it, I got a smoking deal on those rocker arm kits at the time I bought them :D)

I,too want to vomit when I hear these engines referred to as the iron duke, which WAS a pontiac-built engine! The 153/181 are a CHEVROLET engine, with the 153 available in the 62-69 nova, 181 never in a vehicle sold in North America! But yes, some parts are available thru auto parts stores, if you can find somebody competent behind the counter, which is RARE! 'nutcase

pistons are different from anything automotive. BUT the rod bearings are stardard fare 350 chevrolet rod bearings. The main bearings are the same as 91 chevy lumina 2.5 engine. The rods are different also. Rods are same as 350 but are thicker on the big end due to the rod not sharing a journal on 3.0 engine. Felpro makes marine gasket set for these and are much cheaper than marina prices.

What did you spent hours in parts catalogs cross referencing part numbers???
I can't imagine any, if not all of that, having any truth to it.

A 3.0 liter is a GM industrial engine.(not chevy, or BOP)

Re: 140 merc parts in Car Parts store?

Believe it. I work at a gm dealership. When i rebuilt my 3.0 engine, i took part numbers off old bearings and had our parts dept cross reference. Been running my boat with the bearings i listed for 3 years and 150 hours that way. As far as connecting rods, the length, big end size, and pin size are the same as a 350 chevrolet engine. However a 3.0 engine has a crankshaft design that only has one rod per journal, unlike a 350 that shares a journal with another rod. A 350 engine has one side of the rod on the big end machined smooth to join with the other rod, therefore its width is narrower and it will not work on a 3.0. The pistions on a 3.0 actually have the same bore diameter and pin location as a 350 engine, but the crown of the piston is much thicker and also will not work. My engine is a 1998 mercruiser 3.0. If you have the older 2 pcs rear main 3.0 engine, the rod bearings should be the same but mains will be different. Just take old main bearings to any chevy dealership and their parts dept wil be able to match to a automotive engine by yr make model. I imagine that 2 pcs 2.5 chevy celebrity mains will work..then go to carquest and order aftermarket bearings for that. It will work.

Thank you. I did a ton of research on this when rebuilding. 15 dollars for a set of good rod bearings compared to 100 for marine version. bs.

Re: 140 merc parts in Car Parts store?

As for marine parts (Sierra) from NAPA auto parts stores, don't bother. They told me my seal kit would arrive in one day. A week later it still wasn't there. Not to mention that it took a long time to find someone there who could even look up marine parts. And of course they're doing you a big favor by even waiting on you. No thanks, I'll order online and get my parts in a few days for less money.
