My 140 evinrude wont go over 2500 rpm's under load, but has power when idling and when I rev motor in test tank? It has lots of power till I put it at full throttle. First problems were squeezing primer bulb and ran for 2 minute and would stall. I replaced fuel pump which improved engine from stalling but no power in water?
Please help,,Thank You.

It is a 1979 140 HP. Engine was rebuilt in 1998. Could it be the timing advance plate sticking or a carb problem? When put at full throttle it stays at 2500 rpm's and goes to 3000 then back to 2500 rpm's and stays there. So far I have replaced fuel pump replaced fuel line and changed spark plugs. I will appreciate all feedbacks on my problem. Thank You.

Timer base could be sticking, but have you used the checklist in the shop manual (you have one, right)?

Thanks Jim. How do I remedie a sticking timer base? Can it be sprayed with WD40. Do I remove my fly wheel to get to it? Please let me know. Thank You.

Don't have to remove flywheel. Make sure wire harness is clear and not hanging up. WD40 is fine.

Checked timer base and it does stick. I sprayed wd40 and it moves freely now. I also installed 4 new plugs before I tested motor again this morning and same thing happened. It didnt go over 2500 rpm's? When I got back I checked spark plugs and found one cylinder's plug clean like it never fired? I checked for spark and there was spark. It looked like no fuel reached the cylinder and spark plug. Carbs are crystal clean? New fuel pump. Even if the one cylinder didnt fire it should have went over 2500 rpm's. I am so puzzeled. Very frustrating. What should I check? Thank You.

One possibility for the cylinder with the clean plug is water in the cylinder - head gasket??

On the rpms I would clean the carbs.

Oh and follow Jim's advice on the manual. It will pay for itself the first time you fiddle with it.

I cleaned carbs. I am looking at the sticking timing base. I had in test tank today and when I moved timing arm the engine jumped up in rpm's. I have to spray all cables and linkage and see if it will move more freely tomorrow. Going to take it out for a test run on monday. Thank You all for your help! This is a great site and I have learned so much from the professionals!

I started motor today and it starts right up, but it is now spitting, missing and think that it might be that cylinder that wasnt firing with the clean spark plug. I will be picking up a coil tomorrow and try to see if it will idle better:/.

I don't mean to scare you to death or anything, but your symptoms sound all too familiar to me. Just out of curiosity, have you pulled the heads to get a look at the pistons and cylinders? My problem with my 1979 E-rude 140 was doing the exact same thing and come to find out, I'd dropped a cylinder due to broken piston rings! My advice to you would be to STOP running the engine until you know for sure you don't have an internal problem. In my experience with this engine, I've learned that carbon build-up is something you should really try to keep under control as best you can. So IF, when the heads are pulled, you find that everything is in good shape, I would really suggest you make decarbing a part of your preventative maintanence! These crossflow engines are particularly notorious for carbon build-up, especially with todays poor fuel, and is why mine went down (stuck piston rings that eventually broke). Currently, I'm in the process of rebuilding due to this problem. With a little more knowledge, I could surely have avoided it. If this is the case with yours, look for my postings, with photo's, in the very near future and follow my threads for some helpful information should you decide to rebuild yours by yourself. Oh yeah, I saw an OEM manual on E-Bay a couple days ago. The bid was $10.00!!! It would be in your best interest to start there regardless of whether or not you decide to rebuild. All the information you need is in that book. Helpful advice can alway's be found right here! These guy's are GREAT !!! Best wishes to you and your '79 Rude......................ALAN
