Sorry to hear that.

Yeah the thrust bearings are the main bearings that wrap around the edges. They would be the ones on the right in your photo.

Sealed power 4123MA bearings should work, or is there something extra special about the mercruiser/sierra bearings?

Is it possible that you bent the timing cover when hammering away to get the balancer on or the seal replaced? Could have caved it in a little where the shaft seal is maybe? Just thinking out loud here.

An update for those following. Case is closed. I pulled the pan off and all the bearings are gone. Not a single one of them has a face left. Looks like maybe water washed them, IDK but I'll be replacing all the bearings and go from there. Thanks again

Wow. Surely better than finding it where you have to walk back. But a harsh find. Find a competent machinist and have the whole thing gone through. Probably needs cam bearing and rings, new oil pump for sure, and probably cylinder bore and pistons rings, at least check them. Lots of wear happens when metal starts grinding.
