140 Seadrive leaking oil from Prop

Hey all. Its been awhile since I have posted, its been so long that I had to get a new name. LOL Anyway things have been ok here. I haven't been on the water in several years so I'm trying to salvage the rest of the year. Long story short after a lot of work from not running the boat I see oil leaking from the prop area. I drained the cases and pulled the props. RH motor seal looks dry but there is 90 W pooled in the cup on the prop a bit on the ground as well. The left hand is worse with Spyder wire wrapped around the prop shaft behind the large washer for the prop. (Both are stuck) My question is how big of a job is it to get the bearing housings out without all the correct tools called out in the manual. The manual also is bit confusing becaue it is written different for counter rotation. It appears to be that the houseing can be removed without dropping the lower unit. Is this right? also can the seals be change with a seal pik tool. sure appreciate any help on this. Thanks in advance ( iknow Ineed to update my profile Engines are 1990 2 liter Seadrives

If Your Running It On Land With The Muffs Some Oil May Not Get Burnt Up In The Cylinders And Well Come Out The Exhaust.. I Had The Same Problem With My 1990 150 Evinrude And It I Had To Much Oil Going Into The Engine And Came Out The Exhaust In The Ptop.. Just Check Your Lower Gear Oil And Make Sure There Is Oil In It And Is Not Milky.. Im Sure Someone Else Will Chime On And Have Better Knowledge Then Me.. Good Luck..

The oil is black and is not quite as distinct a smell as 90w but once I drained the cases I couldnt tell the difference any more because of the ordor and the fact the lower units oil had not been change in quite a while. On the up beat side there was no water in the oil. I plan on adding some oil in the morning and start the engines without props to watch. I understand this could be uncombusted fuel/oil mixture. If its not I would like to here some discussion if anyone has attempted this repair @ home.

If it is black and smells of gasoline then it could well be unburnt 2 stroke oil. If it is clear (ish) and smells of rotten eggs it is most likely gear oil from the lower unit.

It didnt really have a smell ( but my nose has been knocked off my face ) but it fely like 90 weight. I really am hoping this is the 2 cycle mix because i saw not water in the gear oil, but the boat hasn't been launched in 3 years.

If it's been 3 years then the smell has most probably dissipated after being exposed to the air for so long. Fill them up, fire them up and see what you get. The smell should be there if it is fresh discharge. Look up "waking a sleeping outboard" in the "Top Secret Files" section at the top of page 1.

The smell should be there if it is fresh discharge. Look up "waking a sleeping outboard" in the "Top Secret Files" section at the top of page 1.

I've had all carbs off and flushed with ISo alcohol, replace a stator, and a power power pack. Not to mention all the hand rotation with wd 40. I didnt see that sticky. I have to go look.

Thanks I already read it. Did everything but the water pump. I have a pressure gauge per engine but that doesnt mean a thing. I'll get to it. Pumps are working great right now.

Sure will. I hope to get out this weekend for a shake down run and a few adjustments that need to be made in the water. Then I'll adding my new C90 W raymarine electronic. I've been drooling over this stuff for months final went and bought the stuff Spt 1 on the 2nd they announced a new and better model in the e series. LOL Of course that stuff would be way outta my price range.

Added oil today and no static leaks. I think that says it all.
