Will it idle or won't it? That is the question every time I go out (and every time I restart it). Rarely, my '94 Johnson 140 Looper won't have any problems. Sometimes, it will just not slow idle. Sometimes fast trolling around 1K to 1.3K it will go Da-Da-Da-Buh-Da-Da-Da-Buh... (I know, but that's what it sounds like to me) as if one cyclinder is not firing. It high RPMs good I think, from full plane at about 20 mph to doing maybe shy of 40 mph WOT. OH, it's on a 23 foot hurricane tri-hull deck boat.

It has shop rebuilt carbs last season, but gas leaks out around the float bowl gaskets. The float bowls appear to be overtightened because the gaskets are squished-out looking to me. The leak could be described: at rest, if I dry the surfaces just above and below the gaskets they will be wet again soon after, but not with fuel running out- more of a weep. To get rid of old fuel and fuel-saver from previous owner I ran all the fuel out of the tank, then replaced the filter. I have tried three different primer bulbs, but with all I feel the bulb while I am having these idle problems and it is not firm , so I pump it and try orienting it differently (horizontal vs. vertical vs. on the well deck vs. resting huigher on the control lines) and I think MAYBE this makes a difference for a short period (?) sometimes.

It has had the power pack replaced, the impellor replaced and it was tuned (?) when the prev owner had the carbs rebuilt due to complaint of rough idle hard start etc after sitting a couple years with stabil added to gas. The motor only has a 100 hours on it (it's fact 'cause I got it from my father this year with only 60 hours on it!)

Of the things coming to mind to me, the fuel pump kit is $couple few hundred, carb kits are 4 at 15 each, thermal switches are 40 & 80$ (why is starboard twice the price?), thermostats are 15$ each, and I hate doing unneccessary work and money. Obviously I'll rebuild the carbs again myself to eliminate the leaking (what is a "mild" spray solvent?), but I don't know if that's my problem. Where would some of you start looking?

Thanks for any answers.

what about the orifice on the carbs that control the idle air/fuel mixture???
