140 water pump

I have a 89 140 V4 XL 25" before I got the motor someone else had put a V6 case on it, and it was pumping water fine. I put on a new used Lower Unit, and put in a new water pump kit. It will not push water up to the motor. The pump is working it pumps water out all over the the place on the lower unit/ the mating seam ect. I dropped it again put it back up same thing. Whats the secret to getting the water tube to go in the pump nipple.

The 25" 1989 140 came from the factory with a V6 style gearcase. It's not a true V6 lower unit but it is the same size but a different gear ratio than a true V6 or a true V4 unit. The prop you had on the old unit will not fit on the new V4 unit but probably wouldn't be the right pitch - assuming the old prop was right.

As the unit goes up you'll have to make sure the tube goes into the guide in the pump housing.

When I changed out the pump on my 140, I found
that I had to get it the lower unit in place then lower the
tilt so the engine was straight up and down.
I then could get the 2 shafts and the water tube to line up
I then could bolt it into place.
As to the thing about the V4 versus the V6 case thingy,
from what I have found is the 20" units got the smaller case
and the 25" units were given the larger case
I know how frustrating this is. when I first started getting parts
the dealer just asked me which case I had
Duh. Had no idea.
the easy way to I.D. is it will have 13 tooth shaft or 15 tooth shaft

As for the V4 and V6 case got that all worked out the case that was on the motor was a V6 case 25" with the V6 gear ratio so I picked up a 25" V4. I am have one heck of time getting the thing to pump water.

Update,
I have been out of town with my Job from 10 April till last Fri. Put a V4 foot on it and took the boat out Saturday morning and got 61 mph (gps) out of it and it, and it handles great. I think I will paint it this fall and plan on keeping it. Looking forward to a lot of time on the water.
