1400 shuts off as soon as i let key go into run position

need some help please. husband bought me a pontoon boat with a 140 mercury on it. it starts right up but as soon as I let the key back into run position it shuts off immediately. I put a new switch to no avail. I also seen that all the wires were frayed at the engine harness where they come out of the side of the motor cover. so I completely cut the connector out and re wired all. still have the same issue. please chime in and help me get this boat on the water!

what do you mean trigger?

The three wires (brown, black, white) that go from the switchbox to the distributor are the trigger wires. The trigger is one piece with the distributor housing.
