Your 25hp will be just fine on that boat. 35hp rated sounds about right for a boat your size.

Yep. Normally a 25 is too much on a 14 footer, but yours is an exception. Should be fine.

AHHHHH I do not mean to disagree, I have ran 35hp on 14' Starcraft boats for 20 some years, they are rated for them. With a transom in good shape, properly installed, and common sence a 25 hp can be ran all day long!
Disclaimer: I run a river, with that being said the demands on a 25hp (at times) "could" be harsh.

You're right Engine. I should have been more specific as what I really meant was the average 14' jon, which is typically 36" to 42" wide and cannot safely handle a 25. There are pleny of 14 footers that can handle a 25 and more.

Ohhh all good, to help your point there ARE 14' footers that are better with 15 or a 9.9. Was not trying to argue or shove my opinion down anyones neck..Just my 2 cents LOL I actually prefer a 25 on a properly sized 14 footer because there are times when you want/need the exxtra umpfff. :D

Make sure your transom is in good shape, it was rated for 25 horse 43 years ago so if nothing has been done to that transom in all that time it may not hold a 10 horse.

It should be able to hold most of your weight standing on the engine without moving more than an 1/8'', the engine puts that much or more torque on the transom, if it won't hold you it won't hold your engine either.

please excuse the very late reply :D
just FWIW...probably not much now!
l have a 1968 Popular Mechanics book that has a graph in it from the Outboard Industry Association, can't scan it though,
basically you multiply the length X max width at stern to get MAXIMUM safe HP for your boat,
if your boat is close to 4 ft wide then this graph says 25HP,
l've tried this formula on a number of boats over the years and it's been spot on with the factory max HP plate
