Re: 15.5ft beachcraft transom and stringer replacement

Was there anything sitting on the Mystery Box? If there was noting on top of the deck of any substantial weight I see no purpose for it. I would put the bulkhead back in and create drainage for the bilge. I would also fill the keel with PB and then bed the center stringer and tab to the hull. Something like this...

This afternoon I had a little time so I cut out my transom pieces. Tomorrow if the weather is good I am going to do some more grinding. I'll glue my transom together one night this week. Ordered my fiberglassing supplies yesterday, they should be here early in the week. I'm going to rent a construction heater(not propane) and build a heat tent. The weather won't be warm enough to fiberglass for a good six weeks. I thought about laying a heat blanket over the transom when I put it in so it is warm on both sides any thoughts or ideas on this.

Put a solid 8 hours in grinding today. I think 2 more and that should finish it up. Stern is ready for transom and with a little finishing( the odd pocket of stubborn foam!) stringers and bulkheads could go in.Ground through the hull once right at the back where a stringer will sit, shouldn't be a big job to fix. After i have my transom pieces glued should I clamp it in and drill all my motor mount holes etc. Then drill them a bit bigger, then pb them before I glass it all or after. What is the best way to do that step?

I'd recommend taping the TM holes on the outside and installing the transom with PB and let it ooze into the holes and fill em and redrill em. I'd even drill some holes in that new transom for the PB to ooze thru. Check the link in my signature below.

This will get you pretty close for a boat your size.

15 Gallons of 435 Resin (Uscomposites.com)
15 yds 1708 Biaxial Cloth
20 yds of 1.5 oz CSM
4 gallons of Cabosil
2 lbs of 1/4" Chopped Strand (or cut up your own from scraps of the CSM)

Also about to have the joy doing this...how much does it cost for this list of supplies?
My boat is only 14'. So this should be plenty.
Just curious, not trying to buck on your thread :)

I'm in Canada it cost me 700.00 up here and I got foam . The guys down there use US Composites I believe and I think they are the cheapest, they just can't send resin across the border. There price should be a little better than what I spent. Is yours an OB as well?

Cool, yes mine is a 50hp Force. 1986 bayliner 1400 (14').
I just purchased it and finding out all the reasons p.o sold it lol

Good luck on your build! I hope it goes smooth for one of us at least! haha

Cut my stringers and bulkhead out today and did a mock up. Sorry about the pictures I was trying to hold the pieces up and shoot at the same time. This is the original design when I took it apart. My only concern is that there were only drain holes in the side stringers. Any water that might get in there could get trapped between the compartments of the middle stringer. I guess these drain holes are necessary? Should I put drain holes into the center compartments as well? I am going to lay it out on a flat surface upside down and glue it together and then install it when I am happy with the design.

There should be drainage to the bilge for everything.

It is going to be warm enough this weekend to start fiberglassing. When I coat my transom with resin should it have MEKP in it. I also read somewhere you can cut it with acetone for better penetration into the wood?

Got lots done over the weekend with a good blast of warmer weather. Friday glassed the transom, saturday got the transom in and Sunday tabbed in the stringers. PB for the transom install was 3.5 ltrs ( 1 gal). Thought we had enough mixed three times until we finally did. Glad I dry ran the install 4 times, clamping went fast and it all worked well. Some of my PB fillets got pretty hot when kicking but just in a few spots so hopefully not a big deal. In the bigger fills I'm guessing it should go in in stages to prevent that extreme temp? Gone through about 6 of my 10 gallons of resin probably going to need 1 more bucket. what is the trick to keeping my bilge holes open when I put in my foam? Weather is going to stay warm and the days longer so I can do some work after work. Thanks again eveyone for the advice and pointers to get me to this point.:joyous:

Weather has cooled enough to halt glassing for now, so on to some other things. Can someone tell me what the proper name for this steering system is( guessing hydralic)? Can I undo the cable without a bunch of oil coming out of the housing. I need to replace the cable, as you can see it split through the outside years ago and got the fancy fix. Where would be a good spot to find a new one, and what is it called. Also wondering where to find a new piece like the one in the picture for my splash well.

Rotary Steering System. Hole cover is called a Grommet. I'd vaseline up some PVC pipe and stick em in the bilge holes when you pour the foam then pull em out after it sets up. You can find the cables and the grommets right her on iboats. The "Tinners" use the vinyl a lot in their boats, The "Glasser" typically use carpet or Textured gelcoat. Looks like you did a nice job on the transom and stringers.

Re: 15.5ft beachcraft transom and stringer replacement

what is the trick to keeping my bilge holes open when I put in my foam?

There really isn't a trick to keep these open when you pour your bilge solid/completely full of expanding foam, limber (drain) holes are pretty much useless in urethane foam filled bilges. Water would have to easily penetrate and pass through the foam for limber holes to work in the situation, but the characteristics of urethane foam are completely opposite of this.

If your hull is in good condition and watertight below the waterline and you install your deck correctly, glass it in, and keep penetrations to a minimum and well sealed water should never enter your bilge on this type of boat.

This area of your boat is the only "draining" part of your bilge:
beachcraftbilgepaint_zps41aeef3f.jpg

This is where all the water that gets on your deck should go and where you should install your bilge pump. Seal/paint this area well with Bilge Coat or Gel Coat, it'll be the wettest part of your boat.

The vinyl deck covering is real nice, but as WOG stated it's not really a good chioce for fiberglass boats. Loose edges have to be fastened mechanically and this would mean lots of screw penetrations in your new fiberglassed deck and you don't want that.

So I shouldn't worry about drainage from the underneath?

IMO, I would install your transom drain tube and PB that flush with the transom board. To me, that area looks like it would be a weak point.
