I was just wondering if the tilt on the 15 or 20hp tohatsu was the same as the merc 15 or 20hp.The merc has a ratchet system i think makes tilting the outboard so much easier considering the weight issue.I know tohatsu makes the nissans, and mercs 30hp and under but is the ratchet system just on mercs or all 3 of the products tohatsu makes? Also i have read that tohatsu is going to be building motors for brp.Does this mean they are going to come out with a new 15 or 20hp etec,in other words maybe to bring the weight down from 170lbs on the 15hp etec? Also i guess this means evinrude will have a whole new lineup soon from 2.5 to ? or is everything going to stay the same as they have it now with the 15hp etec being the smallest motor available to purchase but tohatsu will just be building them instead?

I wish they could come out with a new little 20hp outboard, meaning direct injected but also bring the weight down a hair.If anyone has the scoop on this or knows that there will be a whole lineup offered eventually through evinrude please chime in.

I believe the Etec manual start, tiller, short shaft 15,25 and 30 are about 146.lbs.
I would think that the Etec 15 would be replaced by the Tohatsu.
And If I was BRP I wouldn't refer to the Tohatsu motors as Etecs.

For what have read BRP will buy rebadged Tohatsu's 3.5 to 15 HP four strokes versions, not Etec's to attend their small end clients with 4 strokes models as the lowest Etec is 25 HP if not mistaken, and more expensive engines than 4 strokes.

Tohatsu/Nissan uses pinion ratchet system to throttle tiller models up to 50 HP, at least on their 2 strokes engines, with some models exceptions which uses cable to throttle. Probably same on their rebadged Mercury/Mariner 4 strokes same versions.

Pretty confident BRP will not call the Tohatsu motors Etec.

The Etec 15 HO is a pro kicker with power tilt and trim and with remote steering available. That's why they are so heavy. Not really intended for small boat application. In addition, the Tohatsu's are all 4 stroke and the etecs are Evinrudes particular version of direct injection 2 stroke. Completely different motors. My assumption is the motors will simply say something like Evinrude 4 stroke on the side.

My additional assumption is that the Evinrude 15 4 stroke will be identical to the Mercury and Tohatsu 15 4 strokes except for color.

Got this from a close friend who works for Mercury. When Yamaha was making the 30 and under 4 strokes, the motors were shipped to Fond Du Lac where he Mercury guys checked them out and put on the Mercury decals. When they switched to Tohatsu they skipped that step and Tohatsu ships directly to the dealers. Probably be the same with Evinrude.

You can be sure that the only reason BRP is doing this is because there is still a lot of brand loyalty out there and a whole bunch of guys needing a snall outboard who cannot stand to own anything but a Johnnyrude. They'll row before they buy a Merc.

If Tohatsu ships directly disguised engines to Mercury, Nissan with their logos and colors, would do same with Evinrude, why lose time placing just decals, just receive, check, sell.

I guess no one knows for sure if the 15 and 20hp tohatsu is a ratchet system as the merc is.If anyone knows please chime in,it would make my life a whole lot easier as the tohatsu is way cheaper in price for basically the same motor or powerhead anyway.I just need to know for sure if it is the same tilt system as the merc 4strokes.

No, it's not. The Mercury system is a little easier to use, but it makes the engine 1 lb heavier and about $300.00 higher.

Also, Tohatsu does not ship Mercury engines to Mercury dealers. Tohatsu built Mercury engines are shipped to Mercury and then Mercury sends them out.

Re: 15 and 20hp 4stroke tohatsu

A friend of mine bought a 4 strokes Merc 2O HP longshaft for use on a 30" sailboat, that model comes without tiller, it's a remote model, told him to buy same 20 HP Tohatsu model, mental brands issues, went for Merc, big mistake, the tail has a big water screen intake under cav plate, with no traditional sidewater intake screens while Tohatsu has 2 lateral tail screens and a third small one under cav plate. Merc, goes dead employing a unpractical tail model for muff's flushing. Don't think it twice, Go for a Tohatsu!!

So I guess you're saying I should call my buddy up and tell him he's a lying sack of dog poop?

Yep....Or, he probably doesn't know the truth. I have Mercury employee's call and email me to find out what is really going on. Corporate Mercury does not make a point to let anyone know anything. Many Mercury employees and dealer's actually believe that Mercury owns part of Tohatsu:)
