15 Evinrude "slipping"

I can run fine at half throttle but when I hit WOT, the rpms just shoot up and I go nowhere? Seems to happen less when there is less of a load. Any ideas?

It probably is your prop. What size boat are you running it on. <br /><br />I had a 30 evinrude on my 22' Xpress same problem. Never solved the problem because I replaced the motor.

Swabfish,<br />Look to see if your prop hub isn't spun. Remove the prop, make reference marks on the inner and outer hub. Install the prop and run WOT on the water. Remove hub and look to see if the marks are still aligned. If they are not still aligned, you've got a spun prop. Have the prop hub replaced.

mark your hub with a waterproof marker run it at wide open then ckeck the mark you put on the hub see if it still lines up

One of two things - either the prop hub is "spun" in which the inner hub has lost it's grip on the outer hub through the rubber bushing between them...<br /><br />...Or the prop is losing its bite on the water through one of several reasons - motor too short for transom? Prop blades damaged? Bottom of hull damaged and creating turbulance?<br /><br />Spun hubs are easy to check - mark the prop nut and the outer edge of the prop with a permanent marker. Note alignment of marks. Run the motor and note whether the marks are still in alightment...<br /><br />- Scott

My friend and I just encountered this problem. We hit a stump that caused two problems. <br /><br />1. We spun the prop<br /><br />2. The stump dented the bottom of the boat at the back creating an upwards 4" dent causing the back of the boat to lift out of the water just enough that the prop will draw air. We have since replaced the prop and fixed the dent, we now are able to run WOT without slipping.<br /><br />One way you can check to see if you are getting the full force at the prop is next time you put your boat on your trailer, leave the trailer a little further out than ordinary. This way you can check to see when placing your boat on the trailer you can open up your motor to WOT and have you prop deeper into the water where it cannot draw air. You should notice (assuming you have not spun a prop) that your boat it trying to move your truck forwards. You should also note the sound of the motor. You should hear it bogging down and not winding out. If it still is winding out you have a different problem.

It's on a 12' jon boat and the "spun prop" sounds like the culprit. I have another prop so I'll do the marker test and see what happens. Thanks for the info, you guys rock!
