i,ve recently purchased a 15 horse evinrude 1981 model.just curious if there had been any major problems with that paticular year or era of evinrudes.i haven,t had the opportunity to take it out for a spin yet.i,ve finally come to my senses and got of my 9.9 force .my only concern is that the evinrude will not get my little 12 foot aluminum scooting along as fast as my 9.9 force( about 20 mph).and the reason i think this (you may be asking yourself) is that i test drove my buddys 9.9 evinrude (early 80,s)on my boat and i swear to god that my 9.9 force completely blew it away.hopefully my buddys 9.9 was just old and tired.......otherwise i think i may have just bought a 9.9 with a 15 horsepower sticker on it :(

Model number should be on the id tag on the side of the motor, should verify 15 hp.

Thats a great little motor. Put in a new waterpump impeller and do the maintenance, it should run another 25 years.

That 15 should move your 12' way too fast. Mine did, so I moved it to my 16'

My buddy gets 22 MPH from a 84 Johnson on a 14 footer that weighs about 290 lbs. The 15 should push your 12 footer quite well, but I would not expect much more than low 20s without jumping up in prop pitch. I would not want to go faster in a 12 footer myself.

And don't forget engine set up on the transom. Keep the anti-cav plate even with or 1" above the keel of the boat. Try different settings with the tilt pin to get the best performance with your average load. Try and get a reading on rpm. You can use a timing light that has a built in tach to get this. Prop it out accordingly.

I have an '82 15hp... great motor! Idles smooth as silk and great power. I really like their low compact package.

Is your 12' rated for a 15 hp? I tried mine on my Dad's 12' springbok (rated for 10) and it seemed like a bit too much. After the blazing fast test drive, our lake neighbour came over to ask me to give his 9.9 a tune up since mine ran so much better :) I laughed and told him to look closer. (he then noticed the "15")

here's a must read for you.
9.9/15 maintenance article

good luck

My '88 9.9 Johnson at WOT pushes my 12' at a measured (GPS) sustained top speed of 22.4 MPH. Like OBJ suggested, you may need to adjust the tilt pin to get best performance.

Digger:

I had a 1980 Evinrude 15hp for years. It was an excellent motor. I had it on a wide, deep 14 foot boat and it planed out beautifully--especially when I was by myself in the boat.

It was a very dependable motor, too. I had it in for service one time. That was just for a tune up and check over.

I sold it in 2000 and by then it was starting to show a little age. But I used the heck out of it for almost 20 years. I'd say if it is in good shape, get it!

Good luck, Bill

Re: 15 horse evinrude

the motor finally arrived 2 hours ago....what a long week that was (waiting for it to arrive).took it out on the nechako river(by the way i,ve never taken a boat out on a large fast flowing river before...lets just say i had my life jacket done up very tight!)i couldn,t be more happy than i am right now.the motor idled beautifully and oh my god ...the power was unbelievable.even going upstream i was just flying.it started on the first pull as well.my only complaint is that when cracking the throttle it goes from slow to fast very quickly(almost like a short throttle cable)maybe this is normal for this motor ?anyway its small potatoes .grinning from ear to ear! :D :D :D

I didn't think it'd have a problem planing out a 12' boat! Bigger problem is losing your hat.... ;)

I have two 15hp Evinrudes. An older model about 20+ years on a small pontoon and a 1997 model on a 14 ft aluminum boat. Both work flawlessly and are superbe motors. Lots of speed in a compact package!

Mine have a "short" throttle too.

Diggerdan17,
Welcome to iboats. I'm running a 1989 15hp Evinrude on an inflatable, and love it! Any of the 9.9/15hp JohnRudes that I have had anything to do with have been ultra reliable with minimal maintainance. By the way, the only "regular" grade (87 Octane) marine pump in Prince George is at the Hart Hwy Mohawk. If you need a part for your engine, drop by Howie's and ask for Elaine (30 years OMC parts experience!)

The Nechako is so high right now, it is like driving around on a lake (But much easier on the prop budget).

If you see a green inflatable buzzing around, wave me down and say hi....

Cheers,
Snow.
(Cam)
