on a 1990 johnson 2 stroke...does the drive shaft just lift out of the lower unit....once the LU is off the motor?

it seemed like the 15 hp FOUR stroke i just did a water pump on...that the drive shaft wanted to just slide up easily...the lower units look very similar

since Id like to change my long shaft LU to a short shaft...

if i could just replace the DS without a total dissasemble of the LU, maybe Ill keep the motor and just a short DS

thanks

Look here:
http://shop2.evinrude.com/Index.aspx?siteid=1&catalog_id=0&s1=7bdd9b56bf5029f6253731a6c9d2efb5

The four stroke is a Suzuki, so the LU's are completely different.

not really trying to see if they interchange...just wanted to know once the LU is off the motor....will the drive shaft come straight up and out of the lower unit, with out further dissasembly of the LU?? on a johnson-evinrude 15 HP 2 stroke

the four stroke mentioned was just for refernce since I just had one apart and noticed it wanted to slide up..

Re: 15 hp drive shaft removal?

The drive shaft should slide out of the power head splines. If you convert to a short shaft, you will need a shorter water tube, drive shaft, shift rod, different water tube grommet (what book says) I have not done one so I wouldn't know why a different grommet is needed. Hope this helps

I realize the drive shaft slides out of the POWER head...

what I am asking is if the drive shaft will SLIDE OUT OF THE LOWER UNIT!!!

without having to take the lower unit apart????

I would convert my LU to short shaft if doesnt involve a major dissasembly of the LU.....

other wise, Ill just sell the long shaft motor and then go buy a different short shaft motor..

and I wont have to take anything apart

Bob, LOOK at the link I gave you ... there's no hex nut on the bottom of the driveshaft (just splines)!

ok...didnt know what to make of the link posting...because what a part looks like on a schematic isnt a guarantee it can come apart like I asked.

but it certainly looks like it would just slide into the gear....as a matter of fact the 15 hp FOUR stroke looks the same... different part numbers, but it looks like it just slides down into the gear...which I know the four stroke version seemed to want to come out in my hands when i tried to carry it by the drive shaft!!

thanks

next question might be if i can just unscrew the shift rod... too...to change over...

Sure looks like it just threads into the shift yoke, like most OMC products.
