hi all, I just purchased a 12ft Super Gamefisher boat (Model 612425) with a 15 HP Gamefisher motor (Model 255.581503). The title says 1989. My question is who made this motor? Force? Like to find a manual, specs, for it. I went to sears site and did a model search, but it found no results. Any info on boat or motor would be great.

Re: 15 HP Gamefisher?

Yes it is a Force motor made by US Marine. It produces 15 hp at 5100 RPM.The operating range is 4600-5600 RPM The prop is 8" by 8 1/4".The spark plug is champion L82.It is the lightest 15 hp outboard ever produced weighing in at only 58 Lbs.If it is a short shaft , you can convert it over to long shaft by a kit that is still available.Parts that are still available can be purchased from mercruiserparts dot com. Some parts can be purchased right here on iboats.Electrical parts needed can be purchased very resonablly from standardmagneto dot com.You can get a Force manaul off ebay. They were good motors.Fuel mixture is 50/1 using TWC 3 MARINE OIL.(Or 1 pint to six gallons of gas).Could you post a pic?

Re: 15 HP Gamefisher?

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, I spent a good part of the day cleaning up my newest toy. Heading out tomorrow for new battery and accessories for it. Seen a few manuals on Ebay, but not one that covers my serial numbers. I will get some pictures here soon. Thanks again, lots of great info

Re: 15 HP Gamefisher? Over Heating!!!

Re: 15 HP Gamefisher? Over Heating!!!

I took the boat out today and the motor run smooth, but after running for 5 minutes it got hot quick. I shut it down, but she was hot. After it cooled off, I started it again and after a a few minutes running mid throttle, it heated up again. This is my first boat, I know nothing about a outboard motor. The fuel was mixed 50:1 with Pennzoil out board premium. Does the Force 15 hp suppose to spray water out of any hole? can someone tell what the holes on the motor is for ? I labeled them on the picture. I know D is the exhaust, but that is it. Where does the water go in? Where is it suppose to come out? Is the motor suppose to be cooled by the water? or is the water to just cool the bottom end? I would appreciate any help.

Water shoots out the "C" hole in your pic. Water gets sucked in through the "B" hole. Exhaust blows out of "D".
You either have a blockage or you need an impeller. Install a new impeller regardless.

Re: 15 HP Gamefisher?

Thank you, if there is water coming out of C, there not much. The guy I bought off of told me he used the boat/motor last fall, and it worked fine. He seems honest, but you never know. I will get a garbage can tomorrow and see if the water shoots out. I will go to mercruiserparts and see what I need. Looks like the Impeller is located under the motor. Is it a big job changing?
Thanks

You should be replacing the impeller and gear lube since you don't know when they were changed last, especially the impeller since you have an overheating problem. The impeller is pretty easy to change, drop the lower unit and you will expose the water pump, impeller is inside, easy 1 hour job once you get the parts.

Re: 15 HP Gamefisher?

It looks like you can buy the impeller off this site and they ship fast and cheaper then everybody else if you pick the priority mail option.

You should have alot of water shooting out of "C".

I had an older gamefisher/force motor with a bad impeller. You couldn't tell the impeller was bad by looking at it but a new impeller got it pumping again.

It should be easy to change. 4 bolts should drop the lower unit an inch or so and then you will be able to see the screw holding the shift shafts together. Remove that screw and it should drop completely. Remove the housing cover and install the new impeller.

Don't carry the lower unit around by the drive shaft since it might come out of the lower unit.
Remember to replace the key in the new impeller. Make sure the water tube goes back into the rubber part of the housing.
If the lower unit doesn't want to go back up in the powerhead slowly turn the flywheel until it slides in.
Before you install the lower unit get a hose with a jet nozzle and stick it in the water tube and verify the passages are clear.

The job can take an hour or so if you go slow and double check everything. After you do it a couple times it only takes 10-15 minutes.

Yes you can get impellars from Iboats,I only paid around 15 dollars, including shipping, for one for my 15 hp Force. Also you may have to shift it into reverse so,the lower unit shift rod will drop down lower and give you room to get at the bolt for shift rod.

Re: 15 HP Gamefisher?

Thanks, Got the new impeller put in. The water is coming out the back while setting in a garbage can of water. I let it fast idle for about 15 minutes, and it did not seem to be getting hot. The water comes out decent, but figures it would do better of the motor was moving in a stream. Will take it out this weekend and give it a try. Thanks for all the advise.

Re: 15 HP Gamefisher?

Thanks, not shure how it runs. I bought it from Craigs List a couple weeks ago. I gave $800 for it. Took it out and it over heated befor I could see how it ran. I figure he knew it would over heat, that is why I got it for the price. Hope the new impeller fixed it. Find out soon.

Buck,

Looks like you wrote down the wrong model number; that's why you can't find it on the sears site. You have "255..." when it should be "225.581503"

It'll come right up, with parts blow-ups. Crowley Marine . com (and I'm sure other companies) has the same blow-ups, but much cheaper prices. I just got burned buying parts from sears.

Re: 15 HP Gamefisher?

I have pretty much the same motor and had the same problem. I took it out after i cleaned out the carb and it ran great until it overheated. Brought it home and ordered a water impeller and it started spitting water and not overheating but when i got it out on the water, it wouldnt plane out and seemed like it was not getting the the power it had before. any ideas what could be the problem?

You could have dead cylinder, try this.
- Pull a plug wire and start the engine, does it start, does it run the same, less RPM?
- Reconnect that plug wire, disconnect the other and start the engine, does it start, run the same, less RPM.

You are hoping that it will run of each cylinder when 1 of the plug wires is pulled, if not you have a dead cylinder, probably the ignition system. I found out (the hard way) that these outboards will run off 1 cylinder and seem to run OK in the test tank, but not on the water.

(BTW, you should start a new thread for your specific problem, so others know it's a different problem)

Hey Buckmaster, I recently bought a 1991 15hp gamefisher (force) and have a similar overheating problem. I'm going to replace the water pump impeller and hope it helps. How did yours run after you replaced the impeller?

I have the same motor and wanted to know where to buy the kit to convert it from short shaft to long shaft.
