15 hp. Merc tilt

The only way I can get my kicker to tilt up is to put it in gear(Running or not). To drop it..I need to reach behind and under, and hold something out of the way to get the motor back down. What can I do to fix it?

It's working exactly as it should. You should put it in forward to release the motor so it will tilt. Then when you want to drop it, pull up a tad on the lower unit and move the lever out of the way and it comes down. That's the way they work...

No..no. I should be able to lift it, and drop it in nuetral. It locks in the up position, and the only way I can get it to drop is if I reach under it, and pull a lever out of the way.<br /> I meant to say..the only way I can lift it is if it's in gear. OOPS! Sorry<br />Mark

Correct, Forward gear. At least this is the way my old merc worked. Maybe your set-up is different...

It used to be able to drop from the up position if I just lifted it up a bit...then it would drop down. Won't do that now. Also, it used to just lift up when in nuetral. Now I have to ahve it in gear. It's a '91.<br /><br />Mark

I have a 99 merc and mine also has to be in gear iether forward or reverse to lift the motor it has been that way since it was new.
