i picked up a 76 johnson 15 and it looks like somebody beat on the silver plug with the model number (on the powerhead) is that plug just for engine ID? or is it a water passage? ect? can it be replaced or will it leak? thanks.

It is just an ID plug. Serves no other purpose. Wonder why they were beating on it???

the powerhead was changed and the serial number doesnt match the body of the motor. i think they were trying to take it off.

Stolen motor? Can't see y they would deface it otherwise. Even if numbers don't match, just say it's a frankenmotor and leave it. If someone has a question they could still run both id's.

Maybe someone tried to hide that it's actually a 15 by obliterating the model numbers and adding a 9.9 hood? (for 10hp max lakes)

That's actually quite common; I just moved away from one of those lakes!
