I have been looking for a 15 or 20 hp 4stroke for my new 1436 lowe rated for 20hp max.I was really leaning toward a 15 or 20 hp yamaha till i was told by several people and even dealers that the yamaha's were slugs out of the hole is this fact or fiction? But they did say they are outstanding motors and i belive that 100%.

I have been looking at tohatsu's,mercs, and nissans all the same make and they are great motors to and a ton cheaper then yamaha besides mercs they are up there to.also the suzuki 15hp is very light at 97lbs and is suppose to have amazing torque so what do i do?Does anyone have some hard cold facts on which motor will have the best overall torque out of the hole and top end performance?

I guess the biggest question is if u stuck a 15 and 20hp on the same boat would u really feel the difference, most people say it is not worth the extra money because it does not justify it and u do not see enough performance out of what u are paying for but i'm hoping someone here has had the experience with that and can give me 100%facts.

I do not want to make a mistake buying one and i should of bought the other so what is the best overall motor for the money ? do i go 15 or 20hp 4stroke and i'm just done with 2strokes unless i can find a crazy deal that era is over for now and i want a new breed of motor.thanks for any help.

propped CORRECTLY they are doggy at all, not quite as quick as a two stroke but not bad.
most tiny mites come with a prop.
usually its the WRONG prop for the hull.
it MUST be propped so it can turn the top of the rated RPM band with its load THAT day.
means ya gotta test it on the water with the load and a tach and very few dealers or customers actually do that.
just like larger motors one prop size does not fit all hulls.

I have a 99 Yamaha 15hp and a 2008 Tohatsu 20hp and the powerheads look identical. Not sue about the gear ratios. My 15 Yamaha is mounted on a 14' Northwood and has no problem popping it out of the hole. If you can save some money I would buy the Tohatsu, just as good as the Yamaha but probably less money.

Anyone like the 15hp suzuki i hear great things about it?Will it move a 14ft jon boat well or just stick to the 20hp class?I really want to know the difference between the 15's and the 20 4stroke,but i guess it is just not a popular motor the 20hp outboard i guess. It seems that everyone has a 15 either way u look or maybe the 20 is just coming into it's own.

Does anyone have a newer 20hp 4stroke of any brand and how would u compare it to a 15hp 4stroke is the difference big or not worth the extra money?

Re: 15 or 20 hp yamaha 4stroke a slug out of the hole

Older thread, but what the heck.....

I have (2) 20 hp 4-strokes: An '06 Honda short shaft on an RIB inflatable, and a new Yamaha long shaft on an aluminum 14' Gregor. I use a hand held GPS for speed measurement, and the seat of my pants for performance measurement.
Both boats weigh about the same, both usually carry 2 adults and a 55 pound dog. Both are excellent engines and perform perfectly. The Yamaha vibrates a bit more at all speeds, but it may be that I'm just feeling/hearing it more because of the metal hull. The Yamaha seems a bit quicker out of the hole than the Honda, but not as quick as I remember an old 2 stroke 20hp a few years back. Neither engine struggles at all to get on plane. Both have plenty of power at all times. Both boats top out at 23-25 mph with our normal load, and cruise real nice at around 16-18 mph. Which would I choose after having both? The Yamaha, and here's why: The oil filter can be changed without removing ANY shrouding, and the oil drain is cleverly designed to get ALL the old oil easily into your container. The oil filter and spark plug access on the Honda is a PITA. Also, the customer service has been better with the Yamaha. In fact, I missed a special factory offer of free Yamaha extended warranty by several weeks. The dealer took it upon himself to apply for it on my behalf; I got a notice in the mail that the extended warranty had been taken care of. How often does a company do that? That gets an A in my book.
Shop all the dealers after you decide. Ask about stock on hand. The dealer I bought from had several 20hps in stock, and worked hard on price to make the deal happen. It's a great time to buy an engine.
