Rick,I was told by a local dealer some years back that a lot of the earlier Johnson/Evinrude motors had serial numbers that either began with a J or an E depending on which plant they were manufactured at.Case in point ,an early 80's model Johnson I purchased new had an E in the serial number.I think it was a supply and demand type thing.No big woop.<br /><br />I figured that a V-4 cowling was around 14" in height at the rear.If you scale measure the cowling in the pic posted verses the bottom of transom bracket under the steering tube to the anti-ventilation plate the measurement is close.That's basically how I made my determination.Not an exact science method I'll admit.
