I just bought this motor on ebay, Evinrude 100 HP, Mod. # 100993S, Ser. # J0001483. I'm trying to find out if this is a 15 or 20".
100993 100 1979

Looks short to me , too. Also looks like the "J" in the serial number would indicate it's a Johnson. But I defer to djohns opinion.

Re: 15 or 20"?

Rick,I was told by a local dealer some years back that a lot of the earlier Johnson/Evinrude motors had serial numbers that either began with a J or an E depending on which plant they were manufactured at.Case in point ,an early 80's model Johnson I purchased new had an E in the serial number.I think it was a supply and demand type thing. No big woop.

I figured that a V-4 cowling was around 14" in height at the rear.If you scale measure the cowling in the pic posted verses the bottom of transom bracket under the steering tube to the anti-ventilation plate the measurement is close. That's basically how I made my determination. Not an exact science method I'll admit.

I know OB, just thought I would point it out, too. Doesn't really matter anyway. It's only color! I looked at some other 100 HP of that vintage and they do appear to be long shaft. Just a bad pic to determine which one it is. Hope all is well with you! :)

Kinda like this one:

web page
