Re: 15' Sport-Craft Sprint project

jcsercsa is right on the money take your time and do it right even if it seems like a pain it is always the shortcut that are taken that we regret later.

Very true. My time prediction are always optimistic and don't account for murphy but I've always been one to do things right. With winter close, I'll have plenty of time to get things done before spring.

The only major hurdles left are to finish restoring the Evinrude outboard and do the interior. I have been looking forward to getting past most of the fiberglass work and moving on to the next step.

Quick update:

I got the top back on and the storage compartment finished out. I'm finally done with most if not all of the fiberglass work. :) No pics but I'll try to get some soon.

I found a few pictures of one with origional interior online. I think I'm going to do a larger bench seat in the rear and singles instead of the back to back seats up front. Maybe put the singles on swivels as well with some kind of locking mechanism to keep them in place while in motion. This boat will have 2 to 4 people in it most of the time and I would pefer the extra room.

I'll be doing the interior myself so it could get interesting.

The reason work didn't get done on the boat this weekend. We put up a new shed to keep all these projects in.

As always great work! :D

Now we need to have a serious talk.

I live right now in a European city in a tiny apartment, with a tiny steel cage in the basement for storage, and a stupid one car hydraulic garage, I can't even stand up in, that is either at a 30 degree angle in one direction or the other, but never is the floor perpendicular to the horizon. Any hint of a normal domicile is on the other side of the world from me at the moment.

What I would like, is for you to quit showing off. :p I mean enough already. I am homesick enough without you parading one cool project after another in front of my nose. The new garage was bad enough, but you had to stick another cool old ford in it. Geez man! ;)

Re: 15' Sport-Craft Sprint project

it's not big enough. :p

Don't worry, there are plans to add a lean-to on each side.;) My dad regularly rents out the barn that I'm using to work on the boat for weddings, receptions, and other misc parties. We have to move all the cars out before each of these events and store them a few miles away in my shop only to move them back soon after. The new shed will cut down set up time dramaticaly.

You can never have enough starage, thats for sure. :)

I live 3 hours away in a small house in Atlanta during the week and travel home almost every weekend to work on various projects. I'm fortunate to have such a place to work in.

The old ford was one of my first major projects. I bought in just before my senior year in high school. A good friend of mine and I spent many hours fixing it up and took it to our senior prom. The first time we pulled up in front of the school, our principal though S.W.A.T was abought to rush the school.

Sure can't beet $9 :D

Nice job on the Sprint. I have the same boat without the bow-rider. Mine is Blue. How did you get the striping off without ruining the finish??? I've been trying to post some pics of my boat but cannot seem to get it done. Any way good luck and let me know about the stripes.

Re: 15' Sport-Craft Sprint project

Bringing this back from the dead. I know its been a super long time and honistly, I havn't done very much on the boat. That being said, I plan to float it in the next 4 weeks. I'll post a few pictures of what little progress I have made in the past 9 months.

The 90hp evinrude I bought seems to be possessed. It was super dirty/greasy and there was no way I was going to be happy running it that way. When dissisambling everything for a through cleaning and inspection, almost every bolt was breaking off due to corosion. I also found some other surprises such as a banged up head.

1a.jpg

The other head's water jacket bolts wouldn't come out and I discovered this engine was ran without thermostats causing large carbon deposits to form. I also needed a new starter and tilt trim motor and ended up just buying another outboard for $150 last week to use for parts. The power head is trash but it has been a fresh water motor since new and all the bolts have come out easily so far. The starter and trim motors alone would have set me back mor than this motor did.

new2.jpg

Slight cylinder damage. A little JB-Weld and it should run like new.
new3.jpg

He also included all the controls and gauges as well as a few other misc parts.
new1.jpg

I will most likely just pull the powerhead from the newly aquired Evinrude and replace it with the one from my previous motor. This should get me in the water a lot sooner.

I've also been working on the controls. I dissasymbled and cleaned everything and I'm currently in the process of painting a few parts. I should have it back together tonight.

Thats where I'm at now. I'll keep things updated as I get them done.

Here are the gauges that were included with the motor. I would like to use them on this boat but almost all the needles are broken. Does anyone know how these gauges come apart? I would like to replace the needles if possible.

Re: 15' Sport-Craft Sprint project

With little to lose and some careful observation, I cut them open. I set the table saw to cut at the right depth and very carefully rotated the gauges above the highest part of the blade with the faces against the rip fence.
Gauges-1.jpg

I was left with a little black lip on the face that the gauge would slide on when it's time for reassembly.
Gauges2.jpg

Perfect fit. I will most likely use aluminum tape to join them back together so they could be separated again if I need to do so.
Gauges4.jpg

This before and after shows where the cut made the area smaller where the light comes around the edges of the gauge but I doubt I'll be using this boat at night anyway.

Ready for new needles
Gauges9.jpg

And it took less time than typing up this post! Unfortunately I don't even know for sure if all these gauges work. I'll go ahead and fix the needles and keep my fingers crossed.

Re: 15' Sport-Craft Sprint project

All done with the gauges. I ended up using small zip ties cut to shape and superglued them in place. I painted them white so they will be more visible at night since the lights won't work as well after the cuts.

I'll be working on the outboard tomorrow.

You can't really tell by looking at them. I just hope they hold up well.

I know. Oh well, I only have $550 in both 90hp Outboards. I should be able to sell the leftover parts and get most if not all of that back and come in below my original $1500 spending goal.

Re: 15' Sport-Craft Sprint project

built an O/B stand and pulled the powerhead and lower unit off today. All the bolts came off very easily and the power tilt and trim worked great. The lower unit is very dirty but but should clean up good.
