i386, just curious... how did you get your nickname? Are you a fellow IT guy?

Yes I am. There's quite a few of us here at iBoats. I'm the sysadmin for a local orthopedic clinic. Broken bones, hip and knee replacements, osteoporosis patients, etc... People from lots of different backgrounds here. Some have some pretty interesting careers.:)

Then your shop could've helped me with these broken ribs I got doing MMA that have been annoying me for 2 months :) I'm a Lotus Notes admin for AIG insurance, been in IT since '92.

Re: 15' tri-hull fishing boat rebuild, questions/updates

When I realized the stringers were bad, I started thinking long and hard about this boat project. I have decided to do something that I do not like to do, and do not typically do, and that is give up on a project. Here are the reasons.

First, cost. Thanks to past posts by the folks here, I have realized how expensive it will be for me to replace the stringers, floor and transom on the boat. What I spend on it, not counting my time, just money, will far surpass the value of the boat. I know that cost and value isn't anything, but it does mean something in this case. For the money I will have to invest in this project, I could have a large percentage of what it will cost for me to buy a real bass boat, albeit a small one, which is what I want eventually.

Second, this is the 2nd year I've had this boat, and that's time I haven't been able to get out and go fishing. I think if this were a second boat and money wasn't so tight, I might be willing to continue. Boat restoration is fun, even though all I've done is the tear-down part. I know I'll come back to it, under different circumstances.

I have built mandolins, rifles, all kinds of things, and I don't like to quit a project. It is more upsetting than it probably should be. But I'm doing the right thing for me at this time. The good news is, I listed the boat for free (just the hull, no trailer, motor, etc) and have had a lot of interest, so it won't just get junked. Sorry for rambling. Thank you all for your help on the board. I'll be back.

I am not sure if you will get this, I noticed "15' tri-hull rebuilt to bass boat" and it caught my eye. Sorry to hear it did not turn out. I have a 15' 4" tri-hull that I re-built. I know what you mean about cost, even though I had a bit of an adavantage as I go tth ecloth and nida core (core material way light then plywood) through my wife for nothing.

Here is the link to the pictures of the project. I have soince finished the paint by making the rest of the hull (bottom half) white.

Cheers, would like to hear about a rifle re-build project.

You did an amazing job there MarkusB on the restoration of your boat? I'm sure many hours went into it. Beautiful transformation

Thanks Nelson Q. Honestly, when I was done I SWORE I would NEVER do this again.

I can't wait to start the better faster sleeker lighter with nicer paint job and rod locker for 7' rods and live wells etc etc this winter.

The lucky thing is my wife and daughter don't mind the prospect of my proposed project. We need those nice Attwood SAS seats with the springs in them, the $100 ones from Bass Pro are hard on the back after slamming down the lake for half an hour....

Cheers,

Mark

I'm up in Ottawa so I know the itch of finding something to do with the winter months out in the garage. I'm sure once you get bitten by the restoration bug its hard to stop. I'd love to do something like your resto but I'm not sure I'd have the skills to do all the 'glass, etc but after reading these forums, it seems like everyone here is doing it and when they get stuck there is a huge community of help.

I've started putting the bug in my wife's ear already but I just bought an '02 Hurricane 2 months ago with 115HP Johnson so I may have to wait a bit before starting with the project boat.

Mark- great looking restoration, that's as good as it gets. I think if I had a little help, prior experience and (maybe most importantly) the proper tools as well as money, I might have stuck with it. The guy who has it now has done a lot of glass work and was very excited about getting the boat, so at least I didn't just trash it.

I got a little Glasstream bass boat on Craigslist, it's a 15 footer with a non-working 85 Force (it does turn though, so you never know) outboard. It's in fair shape, the floor and transom are surprisingly solid, and for now all I need to do is recarpet it, and mount my trolling motor. Not a glamorous project, but it will get me on the water, and then I will feel like if I get a true project boat, I can take my time. Here's a pic of what I have now. Not gonna win a beauty contest but the fish don't care.

Hey Beer,

Your best bet is to start a new thread with your question. This one was pretty old, and would probably get you a faster response...

I think I get what your asking though, and my understand is, its best to remove the stringer completely, and the old glass down flush to the hull, then lay the new ones, and glass them in to the hull, making sure you completely seal them to protect against moisture.

Hope that helps!
