I just bought a 22ft '70 aquasport with a 150 evinrude. The engine runs great and responds well to throttle (max speed is only 27kph however) when you can get it started. She hates idling in gear and the weirdest thing is she will start in the driveway (with a little coaxing, but then will start up everytime) with the hose, but as soon as she hits salt water it doesn't want to start. I can sometimes get it started in gear (I know this is a no no). It turns over kicks then dies. WHat is wrong with it!

Mike

Hi MJE

27 Kph does not sound of much, considering the engine HP.

To mee it sounds like bad ignition timing.

I dont know your motor, but it sounds like it needs trottle/ignition timing adjustment.

Have you ever done a compression check and do you know if it runs on all cylinders ?

You wil sure get replies from someone who can give you a better guess.

MJE.... I'm assuming that you've been around outboards and that you know that you need to first pump up the fuel primer bulb, then advance the throttle slightly (without putting it into gear), then press the key in to accuate the primer solenoid/choke assy.

Regardless of what problem one might be having, always start out with checking the compression. It should be in the 100psi range and even on all cylinders. Then check the spark (with the s/plugs out). The spark should jump a 7/16" gap on all cylinders with a strong blue flame. If the above checks out okay, I would suspect that the carburetor(s) are fouled/clogged, in which case they would require removing, cleaning, and rebuilding.

There are other causes, but the above is usually the culprit.

Thanks G DANE,
The engine was rebuilt 2 years ago, so I am assuming the compression is ok. The engine purrs like a kitten when I can get it to start. It doesn't seem like compression would be an issue. I have a timeing light but I havn't done timing on an outboard yet. Any tricks that I should know?

Mike

thanks G Patton,
I have replaced the ignition coils and both power packs, spark plug wires and spark plugs. I'll check the spark though. Can I buy a compression gauge at my marine store?
