We're planning on buying a 21 ft aluminum fishing boat. Does anyone make 150 hp 4 stroke engines and if so, would this be the right hp for our boat? Also, who makes the best 4 stroke? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey doclynne.Welcome to iboats.First thing I would do is determine the specific boat you have in mind and equip it with a motor that is within its rated horsepower.Several manufacturers to choose from in selecting four stroke outboards.Choose wisely by getting one through a reputable dealer whom you trust and is near your location.

Thanks,
The man that is building our boat suggested a 150hp in a 4 stroke, but when it seemed that the Mercury went from a 115hp and then jumped up to 225, things became more confusing. We'll have to do more research and hope for more suggestions. Thanks again.

Hi, Doclynne.

As of today, there is no 150HP 4 stroke outboard available.

The closest are the 140HP Johnson/Suzuki twins. These engines have been out for a couple of years and gotten excellent reviews from owners.

Rumors persist that Honda and Yamaha will introduce 150HP 4 strokes this year, and Mercury wont be far behind.

Good luck. :)

Most aluminum boats in the 20ft. + range are rated up to 225 HP. You might want to consider getting a larger engine so as not to under power your rig.

Who is actually building your boat..company name ??

As an alternative take a look at the Evinrude line of direct-injected 2 strokes. They burn just as clean as 4 strokes and are good on gas, and they do have engines in the 135-175hp range.

http://www.evinrude.com/evinrude/web/jsp/mainPage.jsp?Params=N.US.200003.0

Thanks JB,
We were afraid that there were no 150hp around. There seems to be quite a leap in price when you go up to 200 or 225hp. When do companys usually introduce new models? Perhaps we can wait until summer. :)

Jacques321,
The company that will be building our boat is "Rogue". It's a small business that has been around for about 5 years, but the builder has been building boats for years. We haven't given them the ok to start it yet. We've given them similar specs to the Alumaweld Formula Vee. We haven't looked into direct-injected 2-strokes, nor had we thought of twin 75hp! Thanks :)
