I have bought a 86 150 gt on a procraft 1780 and was wondering if the idle speed will be affected by having muffs on vs being in the water.my other outboards do not have a tach so I have no clue as what it is suspose to be.it just sounds a little fast to me.It was idling at about 800 rpms on muffs, it does drop to about 700 rpms after it gets warm.I have not had it in the water yet because I do not want to put it in gear if 800 rpms is too high and tear something up in the lower unit.I have taken you guys advise in the past and all has worked out.thanks

Re: 150 hp idle rpm range question

A long shaft (20") engine on a flushette should idle at 1000 rpm. A 25" shaft at 1200 rpm. In the water, that idle will drop down to normal due to back pressure.

If the engine is now really idling at 800 rpm on a flushette, I'd be surprised if it would stay running when in the water.

Alright.. thanks that helps a lot.I am going to replace the tach because the original one is ugly and old..see if it changes things.(may not be working corectly)if it doesn't.I will wait on my manual to get here before I go any farther..thanks again
