150 hp Ocean Runner Intermittent Shut off

I have a 1996 Johnson Ocean Runner that has been intermittently cutting on and off over the past couple of years. It first happened during a 20-25 mile run in from offshore. While cruising at a constant 25 knots or so for 30 minutes or so the motor feels like it completely shuts off then back on very quickly. It will do this in succession a few times then if I let off the throttle, it smooths out. Sometimes the motor quits completely but it starts back up fairly easily most of the time. Occasionally, restarting seems to take a few tries but it turns over fine all the while. It has done this some at lower speed as well but it is usually upon acceleration. I have made complete trips without anything happening but these trips were of a shorter duration. The last time out, it ran fine for a 10 trip to catch bait, then when heading on out to fish, it acted up during acceleration right away. I made it back to the ramp at a slower constant throttle position. I've had a new stator installed, carbs cleaned, lower unit gears replaced, new spark plugs and a new gasline pump bulb. My mechanic wants to ride in it to be feel the symptoms for himself but it's too hard to coordinate getting on the water when it's convenient for both of us. There isn't much left to replace and he says it's probably the computer(I guess powerpack would be correct for this year of motor), which I guess are fairly expensive. Another mechanic I talked to today said he's seen this in OMC engines frequently and says it's likely the computer(powerpack). He says he found that they were developing moisture for some reason, which is why this problem is intermittent. What do you guys think? thanks

Could be a number of things.Intermittent ignition problem sounds like it could very well be a good possibilty.a coulple of simple items you may want to eliminate s culprit are the safety lanyard kill circuit and the ignition switch itself. Also try and see if you can dupliacte an ignition failure by running engine on a flusher and adding artificial heat(hair dryer)to powerpacks and ignition coils. Those sparkpolugs aree well overdue for repalcement as well.Make sure you are running the recommended Champions.I personally would be skeptical in taking it in for service at a shop whose mechanic/s refer to the powerpacks as computers.

I had a very similar problem with my 175 looper which I seemed to chase all round the engine: shift interruptor switch, optical pick up, fuel system etc. Turned out to be the powerpack, and now runs like a new engine, makes you realise how crappy it was running even when going. I would agree with ob about the "mechanic"referring to the powerpack as a computer; not very confidence inspiring.
Good luck

hello
after fighting many of the same problems as you describe I have found it normaly is the pack. its very difficult to duplicate. usually I install my test optical sensor first then keep a meter on the coil primaries and retest on the water. it feels like someone cycled the keyswitch. sometimes it will be violent enough to almost toss ya out. it was a common pack problem with that year run. jonnyrude electrics we a cut above merc but that still leaves it very far down :) . test everything else and if all tests ok look at the pack.

Thanks for the comments/ideas capt's. I decided to avoid the mechanic who was talking "computer" instead of powerpack and took it to another shop. The shop says it's the powerpack and some kind of sensor that they will replace along with the pack. From the sounds of others' experience, the powerpack replacement should be the ticket.

Check the ground cable from the battery to the block and all the ground straps. Make sure they are clean and tight.

My ocean runner had electrical problems last year that were fixed when I cleaned all the ground attachments on the block on the starboard battery box. suddenly all lights were bright.
Like Walker said......

One of my 1995 Johnson Ocean Runners (Loopers non Ficht- Optical ignition system) does the exact same thing. It's really pissing me off. Since it only affects one I can rule out the safety lanyard....

If you find out what the hay it is please LET ME KNOW!!!

Thanks,

Richard

OK finally broke down , my problem got worse and worse. Eventually it would die at under 4K. Took it to a mechanic at the nearby marina and $650.00 later I have a great running engine again.

For those of you who give a hoot, the problem was bad power packs. Mechanic said a 220.00 part and 4 hrs labor. Just to reiterate this engine is a 1995 looper V6 150 HP - Optical ignition.

Rich
Engine has only one powerpack
220 is a great price for new OMC powerpack & sensor
4 hours labor is slow motion replay
I did same thing @ $325 for parts and 1 hr labor
Total $410
Just a heads up for future repairs.
Enjoy the new found piece of mind of a well running motor!

Thanks for folling up with remedy, I have an engine acting simular and have ruled out most everything else wanting to be sure before forking over the money on the pack. I am going to buy one, anyone know of a good online sorce? I had a good link but that computer had a meltdown.

I dont think I got hammered on the labor. It included a $100 sea trial to ensure it was fixed.

I asked him to trouble shoot an unburned oil drip throught the lower skirt and onto the top of on the cavitation plate when the engines are down. He said it happens on some engines and is "normal and from the crancrank case.

What wasnt included was the ten foot mar on both sides of my boat. One through the vinyl graphic. OR the rub rail now pressed inside it's holder. I HATE taking anything I own to a service center. They almost always seem to screw up something.

Unfortunately it sounds like those things were included. Have you mentioned the damage to the dealer? If he is worth his salt he will make it good. One of his techs probably took it out and the owner knows nothing of the damage. Glad it's running right.
