Re: 150 Johnson dies from warm start

I've got a 96 faststrike and I'm having problems with fuel also. So we are not alone with this issue! I've changed all lines and primer ball,anti-syphon on tank and now it will start but when it starts to bogg a bit I'll pump the primer ball and it die's...

Still working on it!!!

Spike

Chris,

I have the exact problem with my 1994 175 Johnson Faststrike. Did you ever figure out the root cause of your problem?

Thanks,

Jerry

Re: 150 Johnson dies from warm start

Hi Jerry, Welcome to iboats. Well a bit of water has passed under the bridge since this post. A lot of people with these motors (150 & 175 loopers) report similar problems. Seems to be a common problem with these motors. Whether it's related to any one cause is hard to tell. From what I've picked up from others, it's important that the motor is setup correctly, i.e. lync & sync & timing are spot on and that low speed carb jets are set correctly.

I've done quite a lot of checking/tuning on my motor but can't actually verfiy if I've fixed the problem completely as it's winter here and I've only used my boat once in the last 3 months. Last time I went out it seemed to be OK but I didn't get a chance to give it a good test.

A few things I've picked up:
The reason that the problem only occurs when the motor is warm is probably related to the fact that the motor has a Quikstart feature which advances the ignition timing by 10 degrees when it is cold. Seems to make a difference.

My motor had a sticky timing plate (a few others have reported the same problem). The optical timing sensor is attached to a rotating plate which rotates in a plastic track. This is returned to idle position under spring tension. Mine wasn't returning fully. I fixed this myself using fine valve grinding paste. I lapped the two surfaces into each other until the plate rotated freely (with some grease to lubricate).

So my advice;
- Check that timing is spot on (you need an anlayzer to do this properly - I can help with this if you want to build your own.)
- Check that idle mixture screws are set not too lean
- Check that throttle/ignition are linked & synched correctly

You'll need a service manual if you want to have a go at these yourself (not too hard).

Re: 150 Johnson dies from warm start

Thanks Chris,

I now am starting to think it is the low speed idle. Just had the motor rebuilt and took it in for a 10 hr. check up. They re-torqued the heads and adjusted the idle. Prior to them doing this, I did not have a problem. It's under warranty for a year so hopefully they can figure it out. It's 102 here today in Dallas, too hot to fish. Can't wait for winter! Really appreciate the info. Talk to you later.

Thanks,

Jerry

2003 Johnson 150 HP motor just purchased used does alot of the same symptoms. My motor runs fine cold but is tough to start after the motor has sat abit. it will start and die, start and die, put in neutral rev it up slightly, back in gear and it will die.finally you can get it to run after 10-20 starts. boat then runs fine at high speeds. seems like it it starved of fuel??

Re: 150 Johnson dies from warm start

Sounds like a very similar problem to the one that I (& others) had. My problem is completely fixed. It wasn't a fuel problem. I can't be 100% sure but I think it was related to the timing advance plate sticking and not fully returning as in my post above. This advances your timing at low throttle settings. I'd check this out first. Aso check your link & sync is set up correctly. It's easy to do if you have the manual.

Re: 150 Johnson dies from warm start

i have the exact same problem with my 96 150 faststrike-it always has the problem when its hot....i checked for spark when it acts up---no spark---electrical---i have been reading alot about this problem and we are not alone the only thing is that no one has had a exact answer to the problem--power pack? stator? temp sensors? the first part i am going to replace is the optical sensor need to order the part & a manual and figure out how to set the timing which im sure will require a tool i dont have..no way around it if its electrical its going to cost
