150 Johnson Flywheel removal

Two days one bent puller and the flywheel still dosent want to come off. You would think there would have been a better design. Ihave soaked it with PB blast and let it set for two days. In addition I used a impact wrench to tighten the puller. I have rapped the puller with a hammer. Still no luck. Maybe It is time for a little heat? Am I missing something here?

Dont use heat.

Be sure you are using grade 8 bolts, it will pop off

My little 6HP took 2 days to come off... make sure you don't have the puller cocked to one side.

I had to say a few choice words before mine came off... have you tried that yet?

Keep it at... it will pop loose.

About one hour after original post I went back to the garage to face my oponent again. This time with my wife's hair dryer. I used the hair dryer to apply heat to the flywheel. Thirty minutes later two blast from the impact wrench pop. I did use several choice words during this whole process. Now to replace the stator and voltage regulator. Thanks for your replys.

The hair dryer is not a bad idea. I am struggling with a flywheel on a 150 johnson right now, if its not off by tomorrow, I may pull out a heat gun. I might throw a bit of ice water on it after that.

I'm three days into pulling one from a '97 Johnson 200. Got the 'P' oil on it (mouse milk) and the puller engaged. The 1/2 inch impact does no good, so I've been using a Mac breaker bar with a five foot (that's 5') cheater on it... still nada! The heat gun idea sounds very appealing. I'll give it another couple days then it's going to the pros!

what worked for me was a large raw hide hammer,I hit the flywheel on 1 side about 2-4" from the edge and poped right up. I hit it in the center for 2 days (steel hammer)and nothing but just 1 hit on the side (raw hide)was the trick.I would not hit it there with a steel hammer thou.

I used a machinists deadblow (lead hammer) on the top corner of the outter rim, couple of heavy taps and it popped loose.

Well, day three of "Attack of the Flywheel" in 3d and no joy! I got my trusty machinist dead blow (shockingly I know what one is and actually have one) and beat the crap out of it. Nada! So I got my industrial heat gun out and warmed it a bit, beat the crap out of it some more... Zilch! As I was hitting it, I was watching epoxy fall out the bottom. A reach up underneath revealed that ALL the magnets are now loose. lol I didn't heat it that much so it may be a blessing. At least it was discovered before I wrecked my stator.

So I need some ideas. Anyone been stuck beyond heat and hammer? Let me know.

Mac...I recall reading and looking at the pics from a post on this forum or another of a fellow that cut a pie wedge from his fw with an air grinder and a cold chisel for the last 1/2" or so...and still had to drive a wooden wedge in the gap to expand it enough for it to release from crank...sure hope it doesn't come to that for you...I'd suggest finding another fw in advance it worse comes to worse

IF you are not using the factory flywheel puller, be aware that automotive pulley and steering wheel removers and regular gear pullers are not strong enough in most situations. If you have a sheared flywheel key or if someone used and impact gun to install the flywheel last time, then you may really have removal issues.

Hammering on the center bolt transfers all that force to the lower crankshaft ball bearing (thrust bearing) and usually makes flat spots on the balls and race. You will notice it damaged if you hear a whining or whooshing sound when the motor runs which means a teardown and a bearing replacement.

If the flywheel is still usable after you get it off, be sure to have the interior bead blasted before gluing the magnets back onto it. Use the factory expoxy kits or complete magnet kits if needed.

Wow you guys really know how to cheer a guy up! LMAO! It is true that I'm using a craftsman balancer puller, and a better puller would be ... well, better. But this puller is pretty well built and should put enough pressure on a flywheel with a tapered shaft.

I think for my next try I'm going to get longer bolts and apply a little heat to the area around the crankshaft. I think a small amount of heat won't hurt too much and plus I'll get to play with fire. At least I don't have to worry about jarring magnets loose anymore. lol

UPDATE:

I decided to replace the 3/8 bolts with 4" long ones and spin the puller until something gave. As predicted, my craftsman puller broke in half. They were kind enough to refund my purchase price.

Now I am in the market for a puller, I will keep y'all posted.

I broke two pullers trying to remove one from my 84 140. I finnally got so pissed that I said the helll with it and on the third puller that was bending I took my 5ft long pry bar and went between the block and the flywheel and gave it alittle "assistance"! Shot off like a rocket ! No damage to the flywheel or block ! I had to pull it two more times the exact same way and it works perfect. I now know it doesnt even take alot of preasure just a quick snap of the bar and it pops right loose! Just dont catch the edge of the stator or u might need a new one of those. Just load up the puller till its really staining and give it a quick pop. Good Luck!

X 2 worked for me after breaking 2 pullers and destroying all the treads on my flywheel. I did exactly what is mentioned here.

I sent them an email to get some pricing. I would like the lifting ring that goes with it too since I have a minor water leak at the base of my powerhead. But that will have to be a different thread.
