I have a 1987 150 GT Johnson outboard. I bought it on E-Bay and was told it was in top shape, no problems. Man, I hope that the guy that sold me this cant sleep at night. One of the issues that I have is that the motor seems very loose at the top and has a lot of play between the motor and the rest of the mount. I bought a Clymer manual, but nowhere does it talk about the mounts. Help.

You can see an exploded view and part numbers at "http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=E" Don't use the quotation marks.

Re: 150 Johnson Motor Mounts

sorry but, bottom line is,if its the top mounts are bad,the powerhead needs to come off, then the plate that goes between the exhust housing and powerhead,is this a fresh water or salt used engine. Salt use will likely need the help of some heat.If you notice just under the cowling pan in the front of the engine ,theres two 3/4 head bolts, they are the mounting bolts,by some miricle they may tighten up,but odds are not good, usually the rubber in the mounts rot away causing the failure, also it is in a hot area.I suggest doing the bottom ones as well as they probably have had alot of play due to the top being bad. they are easy.four 7/16 bolts and the mounting bolts each side

You should check the steering tube splines at the bottom of the tube. See a lot of this on this model and year engine.

Ditto Clanton. We've seen that nut loose more times than the upper mount being bad.

Where ya been?

Thanks guys. The replies you all sent gave me the information I needed. I can check the steering tube splines, but pulling the powerhead will have to wait.I have my boat out of the water and covered over, so I wont be able to pull it until spring when it thaws out. Many Thanks

Re: 150 Johnson Motor Mounts

If the engine can be moved fore and aft, suspect the top main motor mounts.

If the engine only moves (shakes bad) port and starboard, suspect the lower steering shaft splines.

I checked the steering tube and it was tight. The top 3/4 inch bolts are tight as well. I guess the mounts are bad as I can see it moving around at the top when I shake it.
I guess that I will have to pull the powerhead in the spring. Thanks again to you all. At least I know how to fix it now thanks to you guys. I couldnt believe that the Clymer manual doesen't cover the mid section at all.

Re: 150 Johnson Motor Mounts

Clanton wasn't talking about the steering tube in the front of the motor. He's talking about the steering shaft that runs down the front just ahead of the mid section. At the bottom are splines with a nut. If that nut is loose it'll act just like a bad upper mount.
