Re: 150 merc hard steering

the steering wheel turns like the steering is stiff. the cables are not wire. two cables push to turn one way and pull to turn the other way. one cable runs thru bracket on the motor, the other cable runs thru pipe that is hooked to the bracket. the cables hook to a rod which in turn run to the motor, which turn the motor. is there an ajustment on the steering wheel, how about under the dash where the cables hook on the steering wheel, doe's that need lubercated? thanks Ed

Re: 150 merc hard steering

My steering cable was very stiff when I got the boat (It's a single push-pull cable). Took the cable out and took it to an old friend who owns a business that makes cables.

He hanged it from the ceiling and every couple of hours tried to get some parafin into it and moving it in and out.

He kept doing this for 3 days. At one point also soaked each end in a tub of parafin while working the cable in and out.

My cable is as good as new now.

I have a 1976 model 1150, 115 hp and there are 2 grease fittings below the front of the motor. After greasing them my steering was much better.
