Hi guys, hope someone can point me in the right direction.1995 150 ocean pro is trying to engage in reverse ,the prop is turning a little and I can clearly hear the gears trying to engage but only actually engage once in a while when I push the reverse throttle down until the rpms are getting too high to safely engage.Fwd works fine and there were no metal shavings in the gear lube when I changed it.Is there a simple way to determine if it is an adjustment in the cable or something more serious??

Remove the shift controls at the motor. Manually shift the motor and see how she works. If good, it's a control cable adjustment problem. If still bad, you'll need to drop the lower unit and check the shift rod height adjustment. Be sure to be within ± 1/16" of nominal height. If height is ok, may be an internal gear/dog issue that will require breakdown and inspection. If height was off, adjust to correct height and try again. You may have to adjust controls after a shift rod adjustment.
Good luck

Thanks Angus but this setup looks more involved than the old 115 I used to have .Cant really see easily how to remove the control.

Section 1 page 38 of service manual: Simply remove cotter like pin and slide off black plastic rod and washer. Grab and shift the right angle shift lever by hand. Adjustment will not be affected. It's on the stbd side appx 2/3 the way back. Have someone else operate the controls and take a peek and it will be obvious what to do. Post back if you need further help.
Good luck
