Getting ready to haul my Mako this weekend and when I put it in reverse the other day it did not go smoothly. It was similar to an outdrive when shifting too slow.It finally engaged but I had to throw it in reverse pretty hard.Fwd was as smoothe as silk but reverse is now a problem.I have had outdrives that when low on gear lube shifted in reverse erratically and it is very similar to that. This will be the first thing I check.Any other suggestions??? Disconnect the cable and shift by hand. If its OK, we can assume the cable has stretched.

Those cables can be a bit tricky to get to. Those spring clips can be a pain. I'd just take the cover off the lower pan and unbolt the U shaped clip. Then shift it by hand. If you do change the cables, removing the pan as you remove the cables makes things a lot easier.
