Hello All,

I was out for a family cruise doing about 25mph and got into some big swells, when i throttled down I noticed my Port(twin engines) had shut down. I saw that the Tach was on 0 and I smelled a burning rubber smell . I gave it a minute then tried to turn it over but it would not start. I started back towards the dock on my starboard engine and then tried the Port again a few minutes later, it would crank but not stay started. The smoke looked darker than usual but I'm not completely sure, I was a little panicked.
The next day I went down and changed the fuel filter and spark plugs and tried it again but same thing, it would turn over but not stay running. I gave it some throttle in neutral and it started but died out immediately.

Any thoughts before I take it to the shop? I'm afraid to do anything else incase I may be doing any damage.

Thanks,
JPA

Did you locate where the burning smell was coming from , I know the water cooled rectifiers can go on these and burn up but this would not normally kill the ignition sides of things , have you checked the spark on all the cylinders ? maybe the CDI unit has gone pop .

Re: 150 Ocean Pro trouble

They are 1995's. Water pumps and Tstats changed this spring. It had a very strong stream when I left the dock so I think the cooling system was functioning but that was 15-20 minutes prior. I had also been out running for 30-40 minutes prior to that. I had stopped back to get fuel and pick up passengers at the dock, the engine sat maybe 15-20 minutes.

I was not able to pinpoint the smell at the time. I have not checked the spark, I did replace the plugs the next day but same result. It will turn over but shuts right down. I put it in neutral and put the throtle up and it started but I throtled down to avoid any damage and it shut down again.

Thanks for the help,

Could this be some type of Belt burning? Where are the belts located and how would I check it to see if that may be the source?
Any other thoughs on what could cause a burnt rubber odor?

No belts on that one. Try a hose, water pump impeller or electrical insulation.

Re: 150 Ocean Pro trouble

Thought I would provide an update after going to the local evinrude dealer to have it looked at. First thing they checked was compression. Left Bank all at 110 and right were all between 110-115 so that was good news. Then they checked for spark and all plugs were functioning well, again good news. We attempted to fire it up with throtle up and in neutral, this was able to recreate the burning odor. They said it may be a wiring issue so they disconnected the harnes at the engine plug and put on a short harness with a key on it and she fired right up. Long story short, they are going to replace the harness next week and hopefully she will be back on the water soon. :)

Thanks for all the help,

JPA
