150 Optimax (cough / sputtering problem)

Here's one for you guys, hopefully you can help me out.

Last season I refurbished my boat (18ft Maxum bowrider) with the 150 Optimax V6, oil injected, late 90s model. Has run beautifully the past two season.

A couple weeks ago while having it at idle for approximately 7-10 minutes, once I went to gas it to get up on plane, it coughed, choked and sputtered. I immediately pulled back into neutral, it coughed once or twice more, then shut down. No beeps, no warning signals, nothing.

I went to fire it back up, and it wouldn't fire. It would turn over no problem, but wouldn't fire. I then checked the primer bulb and there wasn't any pressure in it. I gave it a few pumps, it fired up right away, and away I went. That was about 2-3 weeks ago.

The same thing happened today, went to gas it, it sputtered a little and shut down. Again, no signals, beeps, etc. I primed the bulb, waited a minute, fired it up and took off. It ran perfectly back to the launch.

So I'm curious as to what it is? Has anyone had this problem before? How did you remedy the situation?

I haven't had it tuned up or anything since I had it installed last summer. The plugs are the ones that were in it from last year. I've been told I can get many years on these plugs, but I was planning on switching them out for next season. I don't think it's the fuel pump, or else I wouldn't be running at all.

Hopefully someone on here will have an idea. Right now it doesn't feel like a major issue, but I'd like to fix it as soon as possible.

Thanks everyone.

Rebuild the mechanical square fuel pump with new check valves and diaphrams...it brings fuel from boat to VST tank.

Is this a major job Bullet? What does it consist of?

I'm a little cautious with this engine as it's bigger and more bad ***.

Thanks.

Easy job and just buy the diaphram kit part #21-857005A1

Thanks Bullet. I'll get on this. Can you access the diaphragm and whatever else fairly easily? I'm not too keen on removing a bunch of parts in order to do a job because I'm not the most experienced.

I'll also wait for some other opinions.

Appreciate it Bullet, thanks!

Remove cowling,go to port side of engine, look above VST tank or follow fuel lines to square pump,2 bolts to remove pump,2 fuel lines to disconnect..

Thanks Bullet, what does the VST look like? Any chance you have a picture? I will take a picture of the port side tomorrow and post it. Then maybe you can point it out.

I will also get myself a manual.

Thanks again Bullet.

Fuel delivery issue bud. Probably pump or lift pump not sure what your motor is equipped with. Motor could also be picking up water from **** gas or bad o-ring on fuel fill cap. Sorry man I wish there was a guaranteed answer but as always with boats there is never one answer

Re: 150 Optimax (cough / sputtering problem)

No worries Blevins, I'm leaning towards a fuel delivery issue as well.

I took it out yesterday with nearly close to 900lbs of weight, myself, two friends and an anchor block we were dropping, and the boat ran beautifully. No stalling, no sputtering, just a strong running motor.

I'm away for the next few weeks, and will get on fixing the problem once I get back. I'm going to start with the fuel diaphragm, and work my way from there. It may be in the fuel line, primer bulb, gummed up lines or gas tank, etc.
