150 rude, does jack plate make much difference?

I have a 17.5 , 1989 procraft bass boat, I may install a 150 rude onto it. What benefits are achieved by the use of a jack plate? Thanks

really for running skinny water at higher speeds. the set back allow you to raise the motor, 1 inch for every foot of set back.

it also adds more weight to the stern, effecting hole shots.

Thanks TD...I always wondered what was the benefits of jack plates. I never really saw where it would make much difference.

Sparki, A jackplate can really add some high speed performance to a performance-orientated boat. Slow speed hulls benefit less.

Jackplates are all about going fast. You will need to have PTT to make a jackplate useful, however, if you want to unlock some performance, a jackplate can make it happen. Oh yes, a hydraulic jackplate helps with shallow water operation.

Where I live here in S. TX flats boats are probably the most common boat around (though I run a deep-V). On the local boats jack plates are most often used in conjunction with a tunnel hull, and an oversize anti-cavitation plate for running in real skinny water (sometimes as shallow as 6-8"). Once the boat is on a plane the engine is jacked up, and the tunnel funnels the water to the prop keeping it immersed at a height that would normally have it running dry. The over-sized anti-cavitation plates are often fabricated from plate aluminum and are much bigger than your standard "whale Tales".

As Chris said a jackplate can really help high speed performance and give you shallower running at all speeds. The setback allows the prop to run in cleaner water and at higher x dimensions reducing drag and increasing speed. I t also makes it easier to lift the front end for even more speed. A lot of bass boats are running them now for these reasons.

i have a manual jack plate that sets back about 4", I am considering using it on my 17.5 procraft bass boat with my 150 rude, I have a 110 on it now and get about 40 mph out of it.
