Hi, due to an unfortuate accident with a submerged rock i needed to buy a new lower unit. My question is pretty simple. I removed the old one and have the new one to put in. The question is should the shift rod be in Nuetral, Fwd, or Reverse for connection to the cables? Also - can i verify with someone that the length that it should be @ is 26 1/16 +_1/32? Should the measurement be from Rvs/Neu/FWD???

On another note - When i got the new lower unit there was no gear lube in it and so it was a bit hard to turn - i added gear lube, but its still seems pretty tight. Is this normal, and how many times should i change out the gear lube before running any kind of distance from port?

Thanks

Scott

It doesn't matter what gear it in. When you hook it back up to the shift linkage it will be right except that with the new L/U you might have to make some shift cable adjustments.

SCUTT, You measured the 26+" from where on the lower unit? My measurement was 26.9" from the top of the lower unit where the two sections are joined together to the center of the bolt hole at the end of the shifting rod.

I actually measured the old one which waas seized and i know that i had it in neutral, so i just figured that was the appropriate height. I measured from where the rod goes in to the top on the bend on the rod.

I bought the lower unit from a company called Tri-state marine. Want the number? I paid ~$1285, You might check Ebay as well thats how i got in contact with them.

I also took out the old one (shift rod) and measured the two and they are exact in height etc. I just have heard horror stories about getting the measurement exactly right when putting the lower unit back on. After the battle i had with the shift rod connect screw to reomve i want to make sure i have this thing exactly right BEFORE i slap in the unit.

Re: 150HP V6 Evinrude Lower Unit Installation

The actual length of the shift rod according to the Solec manual was 26.937" in layman terms that is 26 15/16" and its measured from the top of the lower unit to the center of the hole at the top of the shift rod in neutral. When I say the top of the L/U that is where it joins to the verticle section of the motor. Where are you located I may be interested in your old L/U? Dude31142@aol.com

Dude - I had to send in my lower unit to get that price - there was a $250 core charge. ANd trust me - that lower unit has a hole on the bullet nose the size of a golf ball. Shipping is the major issue with me - i am in ALaska
