had the alternator rebuilt, set the base timing to 10deg, and she still backfires at around 3000rpm. It'll run fine all day at less than that, and if I nurse it up to a plane (which is very difficult) it runs fine, but it is not at all happy with any real load.

Start looking at fuel problems.

Fuel is good, I did a compression test and all cylinders are 145 to 155. The plugs were "dry sooty" I attribute that to timing issues from the wonky rectifier, but what do I know? Took care of the plugs and a suspect coil lead, and it is running great! I will check the plugs again after some hours to make sure there are no other issues.
