I have an 89' 15hp shortshaft tiller merc that has a bent propshaft. I dont have the tools to remove it myself so I was going to pull off the lower unit. Someone told me that if I take it in they can straighten out the shaft, I was wondering if this was true? I priced a new one for bout 215bucks.

What the heck did someone hit to bend the the prop shaft? (full throttle making a turn?)
It can be straightened by a person that knows what he is doing, as long as the prop splines are not twisted. Seen that. The tolerances have to be right on other wise you will replacing seals and bearings constantly.
200.00 + bucks is good price for a new shaft.
Make sure the new shaft is ecxatly the same as the old one.
Buy the way you will need new seals.

Haha, its the bro-in-laws motor, I said the same thing, well I went to go do some maintenance for him(change gear oil, spark plugs, impeller, ect.) anyways I spung the prop and thought what the hell, went to drain the lower unit and nothing but water came out, I thought wow I can't believe this thing was shifting. I thought I might just trun around and get a new/used lower unit, and havent found any for under a grand. So then a guy told me they might be able to straightn the shaft. If the lower unit isnt completely screwed up, Iknow it will need new seals and what not. A project that I'll let the dealer tackle, if its not to much, good motor though, might just give her away and get a different motor if its the cheapest route, but I have noticed high resale these small motors.

I'd get the new shaft and new seals, myself. I would not trust someone restraightening it since I don't know how it's done. As said, if it's not perfect, the seals......won't.

I would bet money on this, that to have Merc dealer, or any other good motor mech to repair this ,would be more than the motor is worth. Unless he is your best buddy and very knowledgeable.
That being said, doing it yourself would cost you 219.00/shaft/ seals?20.00/30.00? .Merc Manual 125.00 and your time .?? Just my two cents, Dude.

Straightened quite a few prop shafts... You just need a press, a pair of Vee blocks, a dial gauge and LOTS of patience... The tolerance isn't too bad, Merc manual says 0.006", I usually get 0.003".

Well I have a dial guage and 50ton bearing press, like I said from what I hear its a pain to take the propshaft out, some special tools needed, cost like fourty bucks. idk, its not my motor but the guy that owns it will never get it fixed, one of those guys.
