15hp hydrolocking

I have a 15 Evinride that I think is hydrolocking. I think that a large amount of liquid fuel is getting in to the cylinders.

One of the users of this engine said that one day it just stopped working. So when I get to it I pump the fuel line bulb and notice that it is not getting hard. It gets firm but I can still pump fuel through it. So I think ok give it some pulls and see what happens. Well it is hydrolocked.

I assume that the float valve is not seating properly. I pull the carb and everything is spotless. I still pull the valve seat and the spray it clean with some carb cleaner. I also clean the valve its self. I then do a full carb clean because I have it apart anyway. But everything already looked great.

I put the carb back together and I check that the valve is seating by trying to blow through the fuel inlet while pushing the float up and it stopped the air. When I let the valve down I could blow through it.

After reassembly the bulb still would not get hard. And it would still hydrolock.

I tried to get all of the liquid out of the cylinder by just turning the flywheel and that worked but I could not ever get the bulb to get hard.

Should I just put a new carb kit in it, or is there a different thing that could cause the hydrolock.

wow long post and no pictures, sorry.

Re: 15hp hydrolocking

Diaphragm in fuel pump could be ruptured allowing fuel to go into the bottom cylinder Remove two screws holding fuel pump to block and squeeze ball. If fuel comes out center hole in pump. diaphragm is ruptured.

Hydro means water. So your water locking the engine? Dig a little deeper.

Thanks old boater I will check the fuel pump today when I go out to the lake.

I know that hydrolocking is usually with water trying to be compressed but in my case it is from fuel, I thought from a stuck float valve. But the bad fuel pump diaphragm makes sense.

thanks guys

Elbo, he meant hydraulically locked, he just used hydro as an abbreviated word, but I think everyone got it. Take it easy on the guy, this is not grammer school. :)
